Hey all. I'm "this" close to buying a '70 826. It has 8K hours, runs very well, looks OK, very good rubber, dual PTOs, dual hyd. Everything seems to work. It appears to be the gear drive unit (L + H and 4-speeds) and has no TA , I think (I didn't actually know WTH they were until reading the posts!). I 've looked at it once and after reading the bazillion postings on this model, I know enough to give it a second look. I now drive a "blue" tractor, but need more hp for tillage on what's more or less a hobby farm. I want to pull a 5-shank chisel plow, sometimes a 3-16 moldboard plow (clay ground), a 15 foot cultimulcher and about the same size disc and conventional drill (for now). Will probably only put 50-60 hours a year on it. Does eeryone agree that this is a good tractor for use as outlined above? Any problems to look for? I only noted one possible concern, an oil leak from a housing cover on the left side, down low (about under the steering column area). I did check for coolant in the oil. Your comments appreciated!

Super Tractor. Handy, versatile work horse that is extremely user friendly. even without torque you have 8 well-spaced gears & it lugs so well that torque isn't used that much anyway. Have 15 tractors of four brands-some newer-but the 826 is the cream of the crop.

Gentlemen, thank you for your help. I have joined the "Red Brigade!" BTW, I was in error. The tractor DOES have a TA and it works well. I'll be driving it home (about 8 miles) tomorrow. Now, I gotta find a chisel plow...

Too bad it doesn't have a TA, but for the implements you describe, it should be just right, mabey even a little too big.

My experience with a '70 826 was not satisfactory. I purchased ours with 3000 hrs, 2nd owner, looked like new. Rebuilt engine due to cavitation of sleeves first winter. Even with new engine difficult starting, not enough power to pull 18 ft digger satisfactorily, 15 ft disc was ok. Kept it for 5 years, traded for a '78 1086 with 1900 hrs, (1991). Very glad to have gotten my money out it. Items to look for, added water conditioner, condition of spindles, steering arm splines get worn and are difficult to keep tight. Good luck with your decision.

With out TA they shift much easier for like loader work.IH tractors have good torque curves you can get along with out it.

Hey Jim,

I gotta be honest with you. If it doesn't have a T/A I'd run (not walk) away from this beast.

Without a T/A, an IH is nothing but absolutely castrated; no other way to put it.

Just my opinion,

Allan

Allan,

I strongly disagree with you about the TA. Most tractors sold in the Delta were sold without TA. They all got hard service and gave excellent service and the IH engines had plenty of torque and the 8 speeds were well spaced to handle any situation you presented.

It should be a good tractor for those jobs. We've pulled a 21' disk with our's as well as an 18' field cultivator but you don't set any speed records. Our 826 is probably the handiest tractor we own, it's small enough to be used as a little tractor yet big enough you can get some real work down with it as well.
