The last time I ran my A cultivision A, strong antifreeze odor was evident, no signs of leaks, antifreeze in oil pan, hussled home at shut it down to prevent further damage. Engine is not seized, no signs of leaks and antifreeze in oil pan,Nerve testing moment though. I am in the process of troubleshooting and starting repairs. I have been told it is the head gasket and not wet sleeves and less likely a cracked block. I am sure I will find out when I get into the project.
Is there anything I should anticpate or look for other than the obvious?

Drop the oil pan and see if any coolant is dripping from those wet sleeves. Hal

Minimal signs of antifreeze in oil pan in reply to El Toro, 08-09-2005 14:42:27
Thanks for info

Removed the head this weekend. Head Gasket is in fair shape considering age except for one spot, best explanation-small blister that pops like a canning lid. This blister was between 2-cylinders and these cylinders had surface rust on walls. Other 2-cylinders looked good (no rust) Pressure test upon replacing gasket will be the tell tale. Not much of a motorhead, but enjoy learning, please keep the advise coming.

After you pressure check it and you're still getting some coolant in the oil pan, you need to
drop the oil pan and pressure check it again and look for any leakage around those sleeves. Those old seals used on those sleeves get old and dry
like an old shoe left out in the weather.

Some coolant was getting into those two cylinders
with some rust. Hal

I’m not sure who is telling you that the wet sleeves aren’t the problem. As the name implies the sleeves are wet on the outside diameter. There is an O-ring around the bottom of them that keeps the coolant from going into the pan. If there is pitting on the sleeve (usually seen on diesel engines not gassers) or if the O-ring becomes hard and old this can be the source of antifreeze in the oil. The sleeve could also be cracked or the head could be cracked and the water going past the piston into the pan. Check everything until have found the problem.
