Which Would You Choose??? Input needed!

I am in a rather tough decision. I am looking for a good hay baling tractor later used for regular tillage duties on a small farm (35 acres).

Next year I am planning on just baling it all off though.

I have run across 2 tractors and am having a super hard time deciding on which one. Looking for input from folks who use or have used them. One route would definatly be cheaper than the other anyway!

I posted about a 450 I had been looking at. The details
Farmall 450 gas, NF, PS, Fast hitch, Tach, TA (but it locks the tranny when engaged so I know that needs work) The bad part is this tractor needs some maintenance. THe fast hitch was welded (although done well), the hydro lines leak and probably need replacing, THe engine SEEMS to run fine, Tranny OK other than the TA, and the tractor will probably need tires, at least rear tires.
$1500

Farmall M, Nothing special, engine rebuilt recently and all new tires. There isn't alot to say about it, Tractor has good compression and runs well, starts easily, Standard drawbar, was brush painted many years ago, $1350

Both tractors could use a fresh coat of paint. I am on somewhat of a limited budget and the 450 will cost me a bit more to get hauled since I can't do it. I am leaning toward the 450 because of all the extra features it has. This will be my first larger tractor purchase. I have a super A and love it.

Thanks for your opinions or thoughts.

Wow thanks for all this feedback.

I baled hay with dad with an IH 46 and a farmall H for 10 years growing up! It was alot of fun and the old girl never had live anything... it was fun. I enjoyed it a good deal. So i'm not really scared of the M even though it doesn't have all the nice tools.

I am still just not sure what i'll do yet. I'll keep thinking it over I guess a bit! Maybe keep looking. I have looked for about 2 months so far and there is no rush so I could keep looking I guess.

Thanks guys for all this.. I'll report back with findings or whatever I do!

Mark: I wouldn't buy either 450 or the M, you don't need that kind of HP for 35 acres. Get yourself a nice little 35 hp utility diesel with 3 point hitch.

Tractors in that size class without 3 point are little more than something to look at and for tractor pulling. Big Farmall gassers are heavy drinkers. That is why so many of them are still in good shape, very inefficient on fuel. Most Farmall diesels have been worked to the bone.

The TA locking the tranny is a MINOR fix. I have fixed two over the years and I have 10 thumbs. Basically all external adjustments; all you need is a pair of pliers and a small open-end wrench-and an operators manual. I'd really consider the 450 for the live PTO & torque & hitch.

I will cast another vote for looking around some more, from where I sit I see a couple of problems. I like the fast hitch and have one But, two point implements are getting hard to find. Also for future use a Three point hitch is very useful.

HOLD OFF, unless you need it RIGHT now, watch the ads from numerous county papers or take a drive to alot of dealers . Yes the prices are not bad, but the "getting up to snuff" cost could be even greater. I would advise getting a deisel. Engine life, efficiency being the reasons. Maybe you could hire a local farmer to do the tillage for you and then just get a decent baling tractor when you KNOW its the right one, youll know cause ya wont have to ask our opinion. At the least make sure you have live PTO and HYD. If possible have eng, trans, hyd checked by some one that is in the feild. As I have found out, go too cheap and the days you should be baling, you'll be wrenching, by the time your ready, ya get 2" of rain.

If you are on a budget, the M sounds like a great choice. Rebuilt/new tires/rugged and ready to go for $1350. Lot of parts around and easy to work on. If it's not right for you, you should be able to get your money out of it. M's have baled alot of hay.

I should add.. if you need power steering/live hyd./2pt.hitch and pto.... look for a 560. A good usable gasser can be had for 2000-2500. Might find a nice diesel in this price range too. When you figure what you will spend on tires for the 450...you are already in this price range.

The old M’s are pretty much bullet proof but I’m thinking you are planning on small square bailing, and you will definitely miss live PTO with the M unless the baler has its own motor. The live PTO and the TA on the 450 would also be very handy on a square baler without a motor. As far as power and weight, the M will do you just fine and for the money it will take to fix the 450 you can probably get live hydraulics on the M if you want them.

This probably will sound cruel, but I’d buy neither. Personally, I would look for a 460 or 560 Diesel as they will run cheaper than either the 450 or M gassers will. (I have to say that I have a lot of diesel experience and LOVE diesel engines.) Any of the 60 series will have all the features of the 450 and are a bit newer tractors.

For baling hay you should have lpto and live hydraulics. That might eliminate the M. And it sounds like the 450 is a money pit. Nothing against Farmalls as I owned several but you might want to look around more.

I agree, if you're worried about the freight bill, the rest of the tractor will break you. The 450 has the potential to put you over the top in repair bills in short order.

Keep looking.

I agree with dhermesc...
Keep Look'n!!
I know a guy who got a 666 in really great shape for $2400 last year. Good rubber, everything works - including the TA. Then he found a loader for $500!! I still hate him for it!

My opinion? I'd want a little newer utility type tractor with live power and 3 point hitch. But if you are on a limited budget the M would do fine. Those old Ms are bullet proof, easy to maintain, and fun to drive.
