I want to change the gear oil in the rearend/transmission of my 1944 H. In earlier posts, I was directed to use 90 weight gear oil. I went and bought 6 gallons of Mystick brand gear oil, but could only find it in 85W-140. Will this cause any issues? I understand it probably will be pretty thick in really cold weather, but will it pose any other problems or issues?
Thanks

You should be fine unless it gets real cold a lot where you live (like -20 F or colder), as Old says, multi-viscosity like engine oils.

Water condensation is a problem on all older IH (and maybe others) tractors. I drain the water off without draining the lube in the fall. After the tractor has set for a few days, the water will separate to the bottom of the rear end. Loosen the drain plug located above the drawbar BUT DO NOT TAKE IT ALL THE WAY OUT!) Water will start to drip before the lube comes out, and you can drain it this way. Takes a little time an patience to get the plug loosened so that the water gets out fairly quickly, but this way you can get the water out and the lube will still be good for a long time.

I was wondering, is GL-5 ok? On the JD board, those JD tractors don't like GL-5, only GL-1 because of brass in the transmission. I used IH 85,90-140 but someone said IH recomends Hi-Tran. Am I ok with the IH brand oil?

You should be ok its a multi grade tranny oil 85 when cold and 140 when hot.

Old Has it correct. If the tractor is stored inside, out of all but casual rain, the oil will last several seasons, The platform (top of the transmission differential that your feet rest on) tend to leak water through bolt holes. The shifter may (it is said) leak water in as well. It has no breather and (I believe) as it is warmed in use, and cooled when stopped at night, the system breathes in damp air, it condenses and contaminates the oil, then breathes out dried air. Thus building up H2O in the system. If milky colored when drained it had water in it. I think heating the housing with an electric space heater, or putting some kind of magnetic electric block heater on it for a day once a year would evaporate out the water. Good luck with the H they are way cool.
