PTO Lever with PTO Shield on M

I finally bought a reasonably priced PTO cover for my M and went to put it on the tractor and the PTO lever goes up right where the cover should go.

If I bend it around the cover I don't think it will work very good, plus it will end up way short and hard to reach while in the seat.

You can see my PTO lever coming up just to the left of the PTO shaft in this picture:

How are these normally setup?

Thanks, Nathan

That rod looks to be bent wrong, and I think it is attached to the tractor too far to the left.

Here Nathan. Kinda hard to see with the toolbox and everything in the way but the rod goes pretty much straight up.

Thanks for the picture! in reply to Nebraska Cowman, 08-31-2005 17:55:03
Thanks for the picture!!

That's what I needed!! I was trying to figure out how the rod would snake around the side of the PTO shield when it looks like it goes right up between the tractor and the front of the shield. I wasn't able to fit the shield up to the tractor since the rod was in the way and I thought it would fit up all the way snug against the tractor.

The holes on the shield I got are drilled too far inward so I have to redrill those as well. I think mine is for an H instead of an M but otherwise it looks like it will fit right on. I think I will cut the ends of the tabs off as well. I need to pick up a few bolts for it too. Any idea what size I need?

Thanks, Nathan

yup, sounds like you have an H shield, it should be find by modifying the holes like you say. The bolts are 3/8

Nathan,

There are two different PTO's for the M's. I'm not sure where the break is but it was somewhere around 1940-41. You have the early style PTO which requires the PTO cover that has a slot or notch on the left side where the shifter lever comes up to the deck. I would bet that you got one of the later PTO covers. Just a guess.

Oops. Looked again at the picture and you do have the later model PTO. Now I'm not sure what the problem would be. Shoulda looked closer before I opened my mouth. Sorry for the wrong info. Larry

Nice looking home made 3 point. Could you send me a picture of it so I could maybe use it to make a couple for my tractors

Sure, the only pics I have of it right now are the ones with the post hole digger hooked up and it is kind of hard to see the hitch. I'll try to get a few taken with the rotary cutter hooked up to it tonight.

Here is another that I already have online with the post hole digger that does show the hitch fairly well:

I can't take credit for making it though, it was on the tractor when I got it.

Thanks, I made one a few years back but it is dirt ugly, but works good. I just like to have more ideas for makeing them if and when I need one. Thanks again

I don't know about nice looking, but it works pretty good!! ;-)

I have some IH red paint that might make it look a little bit better but I haven't gotten around to that yet.

As far as your original question goes, slide the pto shield forward till it hits the pto rod, mark the spot, move the rod to the other position, mark that spot, then take your blue wrench and cut a notch in between the marks and wala, you have a almost factory made pto shield. Harley
