Mornin' Guys,

The trouble with this takin' a 23 year hiatus from the farming world is the darned sticker shock a guy gets hit with about every other day.

Okay, I'm up to the point where I need a posthole digger. Went to the same exact store, wanting to buy the same exact type digger with a 12" auger that I used to have.

Last one cost me $232. Now the silly thing is up to $662 plus the gear oil. Wish I were still young, I'd dig 'em by hand! :>(

What brand were you looking at? If you"re interested, may be able to get you one if you will test it for me. I"ll drop you an email of the CAD picture of it, have some test samples in and could probably get you one to test for me.

Allan, Don't be too upset! We gave $3000 for a almost new BelTec hydrolic post-hole digger. It has hydrolic down pressure, against the entire wt of the tractor. It is all that will dig this rocky, ledge rock, and ultra hard calachie. The pros use this kind of digger here in Central Texas. A Danuser just won't cut the Mustard around here. And all we got for a bit was a 9 in. diameter with rock teeth. A new 12 in. is about $500. So I recon your soil conditiond not nearly as difficult as our ....Thank your lucky stars! Have fun!!!!

i hear ya buddy. the biggest reason i don't have cattle yet is cause i don't have any fence. been slowly buying material over the last three years and been waiting for that right posthole digger to come along. let me tell you, it finally paid off this past weekend. got a real heavy built 3pt unit with two bits, one 6" and one 12". gave $250 for it. no breaks or welds anywhere on it. took three of us to lift it in the back of the truck. now i gotta start building fence!

Hi Allan, I have a digging bar and a shovel that I'll give you, so I don't have to use it anymore.
Some of these rental places have a post driver
mounted like a pile driver and drive those wooden posts without digging into the ground. One of my co-worker's rented one a few years back. Any frost out your way? They're calling for some in western MD. It was in the low 40's here this morning. Talking about prices rising, when I restored a Farmall A 30 years ago I paid $80.00
for the sleeve & piston kit from our local IH dealer. Hal

Guess I lucked out. Got a like new JD post digger, never used 6 inch bit, slightly used 9 inch bit for 350 at farm sale last fall.

I went to an auction a couple years ago, and they had a used post hole digger which I planned on bidding on. The bidding quickly went up over $500. Not sure what one of those costs new, but I cannot imagine it being much more than $5-600. I commented that I would buy new, and the ringman quickly informed me that I would not find "one of those" for that. No doubt it was a good one, but not that good in my opinion. That was probably 3 years ago or more, and I am still digging em by hand. The right one at the right price will come along, but I usually only do one or two at a time, and figure I can dig them by hand before I could hook it up, dig them, then unhook it again.

Suggest you first go out dig a couple holes by hand. When you are finished groaning from THAT, guarantee you'll be delighted to shell out $662 for a new digger!

That's why I went to town in the first place; thought I could handle that old Armstrong type and found out that I'm no kid anymore.

Now, I 'spose you are gonna tell me that I can't handle those railroad ties and 16' 2X12" roughcuts by myself in my golden years?

That,s why you have the old h with the farmhand. Pick those ties up with the loader plant them. Balance those boards on the loader drill holes and drive those bolts home nut them nothing to it peice of cake with alittle ice cream on the side. Us 60 + year old kids have to be alittle smarter than we were 40 years ago use our head in place of our backs. Have fun planting those ties. Delbert

I like the name of Delbert, so does my wife, she has been married to one for 39 years! A while back, I was at the doctor's office and there were 4 people in the waiting room; the nurse came out and called for "Delbert". Two of us walked up to her--what are the odds of that!

I hear ya. The wife had 25 yards of black dirt delivered last spring, and after a dozen trips with the wheelbarrow I slinked off to rent a bobcat for the day. Those wheel weights are getting heavier too.
