I have a IH cub (yellow and white) with the serial number 232726J. I think that makes it a 1968 (tell me if that's wrong). Can y'all tell me the original voltage of this tractor from the serial number? Or did IH produce 6 and 12 volt simultaniously in some years. It now has a 12 volt battery and alternator, but when I have looked for parts online my serial number matches up with generator brackets. There is a cut up generator bracket on the alternator now to squeze it under the hood. Thank you for always answering my dumb questions.

PS --- What's up with the one peice hood and tank on the cubs. This is the first time that I removed it. Sure makes the C more fun to work on.

'68 was 12 volts from the factory, but with a generator not an alternator. Maybe yours has been changed to an alternator.

yes it has. upon closer inspection last night, I saw that the bracket had been cut and welded to fit the smaller alternator. Now I know, i wasn't sure if they came with alternator or generator

I have a '67. It's 12 Volt with a generator and regulator.

I also have an original Cub manual dated 1973. The manual goes to great lengths to describe both 6V and 12V systems, so I'd expect that one or the other was still an option at that point.

Oddly enough, the manual also describes both magneto and battery ignition systems.

Nat, maybe mine doesn't have an alternator. It looks like an alternator, but has the regulator? (a small plastic box like on my C) attached to it. Is this a 12 volt generator? If that is the case then I would be much less confused.

It definitely makes it a 68.

As for whether it was originally a 6v or a 12v will depend on where thechange over occured. It appears to me from quickly gazing at the TC-37F Parts Catalog, that the changeover occured at Serial Number 224401 for 12volt.

So, quite possibly yours was orignally a 12 volt from the factory.

I would suggest checking the Cub Manual Server at www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/index.html for more info or send me an email for a return with one with active links.

Hope this helps
