I am getting ready to sell my JD4020 (too big for what I need) and get a smaller tractor; 40 - 60hp range. I have seen some 454, 474 and 484 models that seem to be what I"m looking for. What I would like is those of you who are IH owners to give your gut opinion on these units, what to lookout for, and if there are any drawbacks (short-comings) of these tractors. I"m not familiar with the term "Hydro" that I have seen on some models. I know it deals with the trans. but I am not normally a fan of hydro-static tranny"s. Guess I"m a little old-school minded but just seems like something more expensive to break. But I"m probably wrong.

So let me have it guys. What do you think?

Well, it depends what you are using it for. If you are using it for utility or loader work, there is no style of tractor better than the models listed above. They all have strong hydraulics, very durable transmissions, and high load capacity 3pt hitches. Problem areas are a fuel tank prone to get rusty internally(get ready to clean out sediment bowl often) park brakes that if left on will cause pads to break off into transmission, plugging up pumps and filters (if this never occurs, the pads will outlive you), a reputation to be underpowered (check the fuel system, if it is dirty, it WILL be gutless) and a diesel engine that is supposedly loud. I wouldn"t recommend one for heavy duty pulling work such as plowing, or just about any tillage work that you want done quickly. Work great for raking, conditioning, cutting grass, cutting hay, baling with a lower capacity square baler, and pulling wagons. Overall great tractors, just very specialized. Sorry for the long post.

Thanks for the info. I will want to plow/plant/cultivate with whatever I get. Probably 10-12 acres. Speed would not necessarily be critical, but I do not want to overload the tractor.

If you like JD, why switch? The 4020 may be a little big and heavy for 10 acres, but if it's what you have, what's wrong with it? I did research in small plots for the Kansas Ag Experiment Station for 29 years, used mostly 4020, 3020, 2020, 1530, plus an IH 444 mostly for spraying. Turned around in 20 ft alleys, often with 15 ft implements with the 3020 and 4020. Plots were usually about 80 ft x 200 ft or smaller, got along fine. 3020 is about the ideal size, although you can go smaller.
