Hey all I have one really quick question for ya, I just got a call from the people overhauling my F-20 motor that its done, they had it for 11 months, I did not plan for them to have it so long, but who cares its done, the problem that I have now is that its to cold for me to paint the tractor and install it right now, my shops not heated, whats the best way to store it untill it warms up next spring, I don't want any thing to lock up on me over the winter. thanks

Jon,

I agree with both of these guys. When I used to build engines for resale, I'd take a spray bottle and fill it with 10-30 engine oil.

Spray that sucker down everwhere possible, put it in a heavy plastic bag and tie 'er shut. Put 'er on the shelf and wait for install time.

No rust, no problems.

Allan

Unless your winters last 36 months straight, you won"t have to worry about anything "getting stuck". Remember when that engine is assembled, all moving parts (pistons, cam, valve train, crank, etc.) are lubricated once they are clearanced. I have stored engines before run-up for up to two years with no problems whatsoever. I would recommend a heavy mil plastic engine bag to keep the dust and contaminates off of it (and out of it) in the meantime. Remember: dust and dirt love oil...and if you heavily lubricate the cylinder walls on even a tight engine, I will guarantee particulate just "floating around" will bond to it. Let it be and wrap it tight...winter doesn"t last forever. Though I must admit...ten degrees F this morning did get my attention. Just my couple of pennies for ya! Good luck!

I would spray the cylinders with engine oil. Then turn the engine over one full turn and then spray the cylinders again and reinstall the sparkplugs.

We used a preservative oil when storing an engine,
not sure if it was better than engine oil. Hal
PS: Every few months you can keep rotating the engine until Spring.
