I havent seen much discussion on using 8v batteries instead of converting to 12v. Will the 6v generator keep it charged. Anyone had any luck using the 8v?

I put an 8 volt in my M and SM back the mid 80s. I did nothing to the charging system, and they worked fine. 6 volts will work IF all the connections are clean and tight, the ignition system is in good shape, and the engine doesn't have over-bore high compression pistons. An 8 volt battery will spin things a little faster, but may not have the amps to spin it longer. If your starter will crank the engine okay on 6 volts, you don't need 8.
My M is now on 12 volts, as the generator bearings went bad, and it was easier/cheaper to convert than to fix. I'll probably change the SM to 12 volts this winter.

DELLBert, Its possible to tweak up a 6 volt Voltage Regulator some to better charge an 8 volt battery, but Ive NEVER been a fan of 8 volts. For one, its an oddball battery n arrangement,,,,,if its a coil ignition and you dont add some ballast, the coil runs a tad warmer and the points can burn a bit sooner,,,,, ,,,likewise, the bulbs will burn brighter but burn up sooner. If a body is dead set on converting, I would go ahead n convert it to the way more standard 12 volts n be done with it. The original 6 will start better IFFFFF F one uses the biggest heaviest and highest rated battery that will physically fit in the box and use 00 Gauge cables. Ol Frank (F I T) put one of those 6 volt AGM Optima batterys in his Case n I think its rated something like 1000 CCA but costs more, of course.

You dont need to change anything. I know of three SCs that have been that way for many years and no problems and the tractors are used often as the one runs a lot in the fall on an auger like all day.

Ive had a 8 volt on farmall 300 for couple of years works good. I also put 6 volt alt on 300 that puts out about 8.1 volts.

The 6v system will keep the 8v charged well without any changes. I know of three systems that run that way and work well.

8 volt is a compromise, a good clean 6 volt system is fine, particularly on anything smaller than an M.
