It seems that several of us have been trying to master this pic thing. It seems to me that YT should have an instruction page for this, or do they? It sure would be nice to have some explanations of the process. To me it"s been frustrating. At best it"s time consuming and cumbersome. I don"t think I"m completely computer brain dead, but I sure am in the dark on this one. I guess I don"t understand why my pic at the photobucket site has 3 addresses plus a jpg. The only one I found that works at all (after much blood pressure raising) is the URL address. However, that pic showed up HUGE on the message. So I went back into the pic in photobucket and resized it to 25% of original so it"s only 320x240 in size. It still seems to show up huge, as I will atempt to demonstate here.
I do appreciate the help from William F and Dave H and Cowman, etc. Anybody else have any insight? I"m using a Mac.
Thanks again,
Paul

We are talking about screen resolution here. The resolution of your computer screen is 72 dots per inch. When you post a picture with a higher resolution, the picture shows up larger. Although a high resolution is great for printing a picture, it takes a lot more bandwidth, and shows up a lot bigger than a picture that has been properly sized for the Internet.

Okay, so do I change the camera before I take the pic, or do I change the pic in my iphoto program on my computer, or do I edit the pic once it is downloaded to photobucket.com?
I"m trying to drag my butt up the learning curve here!
Thanks for your insight.
Paul

If you're taking pictures you know are just to use on the computer you can set your digital camera at a lower resolution. I keep mine set at 0.3megapixels. That gives you a photo with as much resolution as is visible on a computer monitor and the right size. Any more megapixels just makes the image bigger, not sharper. The monitor will show all the pixels you give it to see, but unlike a printer it can't put them closer together and show a sharper image. It shows the same sharpness, but spread out into too big to see the whole thing on the screen. Wm

Paul,

You can't lift your pictures to this site as a storage area.

This site's software resizes and squeezes the derned things to save space on their servers.

Get 'em the size you want then load 'em somewhere else to store.

Hello Allan,
I figured I"d use photobucket.com to hold the pictures that I want to share here. It"s set up in an album with a user name and password. I don"t know much about it. Is that the wrong thing to do? Where do you put all the photos that you put in your messages? Also, do you need to delete them pretty quickly?
Do I need to cut down my original pics before I send them anywhere? I can always send them in e-mails nicely and they are a nice size for that I think. If I had to shrink them first, it seems like they"d be too small for e-mail use then.
Inquiring minds want to know! ;>)

Hi Paul,

Yes, you're on the right track; get them so they look good to you at home and then they should look the same to everyone else.

Some sites just don't allow direct linking. I use this place. It works well and is self cleaning after just a few days.

Hope ya get 'er,

Allan

If you want to go entirely too far you can do what I did. Register your own domain name, ($15-35 a year) buy a copy of MSFrontPage (~200), rent netspace from a hosting outfit (myHost, $9.95 a month). Something to do when it's too cold to go down to the tractor barn. And sometimes a lesson in patience that makes an overheating coil seem relaxing.

Yep, I am still trying to figure out the picture thing myself. I have the url for my pictures, but..... ..when I paste the url in my new forum message, nothing appears. but a box with a small red x. The dreaded box with the small red x. I will attempt to attach a picture to this message an see what happens.

Lets try again, using the url under the picture properties after right clicking on the picture itself

Ok, I finally figured it out. Using the website that I use to store pictures on, I found that if I right click on the image and go to properties, then copy and paste the image url (listed in the properties window) into the apropriate box on this site, It will post a picture in the forum.

Hope this helps someone else who may not know...
