hassan: To begin with the 140 was in production from 1958 until 1979, and maybe even a few in 80.

It started off with the same grill as 460-560, etc. That changed in mid 1963 to the same grill as used on 504 and early 656. Near as I can tell it never changed after that, at least not until after 1975. Yes the decals did change a bit but I don't think the sheet metal or grill changed between 63 and 79. I have a 1963 model with the 504 type grill. I also have 1968 and 1975 buyers guide and each and every one of those have the same sheet metal and grill. I have looked at countless numbers of these tractors, and have never seen any differences other than the 58 to 63 models. With the 58 to 63 it is actually only the grill different from post 63 tractors, the sheet metal is the same.

hassan: The tractor you've seen resembling a 140 at the rear and 66 series on front was probably a 274. It followed the 140, beginning production in 1980. If so run the other way, it has an oriental 3 cylinder diesel that doesn't have a particularly good reputation.

Two commercial vegetable farmer friends of mine bought these 274 new for work on their farms. Both tractors had to have engine rebuilds within 3 years. One of these guys could have written a check for 10 new 274's any day. The other guy it hurt badly in the pocket book. Both had to wait 6 months for parts. Today these guys are using a Super A and a 130 in their respective vegetable patches.

The 274 does have features that caught the attention of quite a few folks in the early 80s; factory 3 point hitch, dual range transmission giving nice creeper speeds and the diesel. Problem is IH just chose the wrong diesel. That parts item could be much better by now as I suspect nothing was in the system closer than Japan when those premature engine failures occurred in the 1980s. I'll still bet there are a higher percentage of SA, 100, 130 or 140 still in operation than 274.

I think they should all have the "squared up" grill. They were made from 1958 to 1970. All the ones I'v seen have had that design. Look through the photos on this site to look at the diffrent years. P.S. Why would you trade a Super H for a 140??? :') Andrew

Andrew: I started my early farming days with Farmalls H, 300 and 130. I can tell you this, in small work areas and on light work the little off sets will will run circles around the H and 300. Further to this, for the guy just wanting to do his yard work on 5 or 10 acres the 140 will do it for about half the cost of a Super H, on fuel and repairs.

I might add, my farm also went on to use tractors like 560, 656, 1066 and an articulated Deere. By 1976 there were 9 tractors on the farm. The H was gone but the offsets remained.

well the H she needs some work like tires a fan frt hubs also i live in town now I don't really don't have use for a tractor that big. I kinda don't want to trade her off but if someone on this site can give her a good home and use her I would like that. these tractors are not urban by any means she need to be hook to a rake or a wagon and used like ol cyres wanted to.
also I known her all my life my dads neighbor had it since she was new he brought her to us for every oil change and tune up. when the neighbor passed away my dad said I goning to buy that super H I gave him the money and 15 years later here she is. It's not a want elaloise that's the super H's name deserves better than rotting down in my back lot. also she dose run quite well and is all orignal except for the 12 volt igntion and a rebuilt battery box.
