I am in the process of replaceing the drive shaft and countershaft seals and bearings. Can the pilot bearing on the drive shaft be replaced from underneath the tractor like the oil seals?

yes sirre you can change that bearing there are 5 or 6 bolts that holds the drive shaft to the transmission you can pull that whole thing out of there the pilot bearing will be retained by a bolt to the transmission shaft

Thanks. I really got into it today. Took out the drive shaft and bearing retainers and got right to the pilot bearing. Guess what I found? The nut had come off of the pilot bearing and the nut and bearing were loose in there. Wow! The nut was stipped but looks like the female threads on the shaft are ok. I will need to get a new pilot bearing and nut. Think I will just get a nut from tractor supply.

Thanks for the help.

hey friend what EVER YOU DO PLEASE make sure you get all fragments of old bearings out of that transmission! i am just now putting back mine cause of a little needle bearing . i had a axle seal leaking pretty bad. i guess that i let the fluid level get a little low.anyway it sucked up that little needle from the pilot bearing and DESTROYED my transmission i had to replace 4 gears plus the driveshaft and guess what, when i took the drive shaft out all of the little needle bearings were there i guess previous owner must have replaced it some time. i replaced all bearings in that transmission from Motion Ind. for less than half what the dealers wanted

Thanks for the warning. Fortunetly the pilot bearing was still intact. It was still encased in the gear well. I bet it will sound better when I get back together.

I think you mean the pilot bearing at the rear of the drive shaft, inside the transmission, and not the one at the flywheel. In that case, no, I'm pretty sure you have to take the cover off to get at it. Wm
