Hey guys -

I have just bought a farmall M and im not sure what year it is. It is missing the tag serial # tag. I have been told it is a 1939 and a 1940. It has the large oil filter, and the front end casting is curved unlike later M"s. It does not have the shifting patern in cast. A friend told me that it might be an early 1940 tractor that has some left over 1939 parts to it, is that possible? If there is any other way i can tell for sure what year this tractor might be please let me know. Also it seems to weight a lot less than my other M. It only weighs about 4600lbs. Thanks for the help everone.

does it have a drop platform? in other words a little channel running down the middle where you sit. does the handle that engages the belt pulley work on the left instead of to the right? realizing this could be easily changed but could it have 36 in. rears

It will look like this (this is on our 1940 Farmall M) This one was cast on February 7, 1940 (You can tell because the casting code in the lower right corner is 2.7.J)

One feller told me that if you look on the pedeatal between the front wheels, the date is cast there.

Look for cast in (not stamped) numbers on the major parts in the form of 1*8*I--month*day*year. The * looks like a screw head. I is 1939, J is 40, K is 41 etc, going in order until ending with X in 1952, the end of M production. Only exception to this is that V was not used in 1951, instead both U and W were used. All parts will have different casting numbers, over perhaps a range of 1 to as many as 6 months. Your tractor was likely assembled a month or two (or more) after the last casting number.

On the block and other casted parts there should be a casting dat such as 10-12-j which meand it was casted oct 12th 1940. j is the code for 40 i=39 model
k= 41 model

You can also look for the engine serial #. That will get you in the ballpark if the engine has not been changed over the years.
