It's been more than 35 years since I worked on one of these, so take my comments with a grain of salt.
1. Make sure all the external linkage is in good shape and lubricated.
2. Take the top off and check the shifting parts. You may have a broken Cam Roller. Most of shifting parts can be replaced by removing the top.

My last experience involved broken roller cams and shaft. I was able to account for and remove the broken roller cam parts at the filter. I replaced the shaft through the rearend after removing the PTO.

Now that would be a good trick But there is no way to get to the range transmission thru the PTO opening on any of the 06-86 seires tractors as all you will find is a big empty hole . other then the PTO inputshaft and some linkage for the draft senseing . his problemis most likely a lot of woren parts and bad rev. shifter shaft and that is all accsesed from the top of the range cover .

Just keep on slamen it and you'll be realy screamen on the price of fixen it > As there is no real adjustment to it if the shifter is in nuterual and ya have hi and low but rev. does not go in wright then guess what it is time to dig into your mouldy check book old coffee can or the old sock as it is time to stimulate the economy as there are parts needed to be REPLACED and also ya went and let the clutch and T/A adjustments go to long . It is like this if you have to slam and jam a shifter on a farmall to get it in or out of gear then the clutch and T/A adjustments are out and because of this theyget hard to shift and nobody realy take good care of there tractors in stayen up on adjustments . Clutch adjustments should be checked every year along with tune ups timming valve adjustments on gassers , Tractors are not a car or pickup that yua just drive them they are equipment that works in some of the worst cond. and things wear . People do not stop and think till they start to have a problem then it OH what is wrong here can i just adjust it , NOPE it's time to fix now . So what all is needed now depends on just how the tractor was treated over the years and how long she has been slamed to get rev. So you start at the top and end up down in the bottom as all the linkage needs to be tightened up and remove as much slop as ya can then it is getting into the range cover and fixen replacen what ever is loose then on down to the rev shifter and shifting fork and on real worse ones ya have to tear the whole rearend apart to replace gears and other pices and parts. So i need more info beside I HAVE TO SLAM IT TO GET REV.
