Tim:

I run an 856D down here in SW IA. Great horse! Starts well in the winter if it is plugged in. A 1500 watt heater for 2 hrs in a building at 0 and it will start before you get your thumb off the starter. If they have the ih front end they do not turn very short. Allan in NE I think has this frint end on his Hydro 70 and he has complained about it also.

Paid $4k for the tractor in 85 with 4000 hours on it. I wouldn't take $7k for it now and it klooks the same as then...working clothes and 7000 hours.

Oh yeah, somewhere in that $5000 range. They are getting too old and with the glowblug start they don't bring the real high bucks. But that is a good tractor and with just a little care will run forever. I was talking to a neighbor the other day and he was wondering howcome that IH has trouble with electolisis sleeve pitting in their engines and JD dosn't as much. My answer was that lots of IH motors will well over 10,000 hrs have never been opened up and most of the JDs have been overhauled long before that.

856 diesels do not have glow plugs. They were a bit hard to start when the temperature dropped to about 35 or so, but I believe IH came up with a cure for that by building higher compression pistons which were then included in the overhaul kit. I used to own an 856 and wish I still had it, although I have absolutely no need for such an animal.

Senior moment, Cowman?

The 856 has a direct start D407 diesel. No glow plugs.

I believe that the 407 had dry sleeves so no need to worry about pin holing sleeves. A good 856 with a properly working pump and injectors will start fine when the temps are below freezing.

Anywhere from $1500 to $8500, depending on many many factors, none of which you addressed in your post. "Fair shape" doesn't mean much, especially if the words are coming out of the auctioneer's mouth...

Figure if:
Engine needs overhaul: $5000+
TA needs to be replaced: $1500+
Needs tires: $2400+

A well maintained 856 is one of the best IH ever made. If it's tired, it's your worst nightmare.
