140 Lift system

Pump on 140 I had had gotten weak. Worked ok on everything except disk which is heavier. Was getting some hydraulic fluid in crankcase. Was almost sure it was pump so replaced. Made slightly better did not fix. So I went ahead and put kit in it replaced gaskets o rings etc. several which did indeed need replacing. This helped even more. Tractor picks up disk which is probably about 500 pds better. However, it still not exactly like it should. Takes about 5-6 seconds for lift to complete cycle. Plenty of pressure is there. If tractor is moving like you turn around at end of row comes up much quicker. After looking closely at pump which did not do when I replaced original which was on tractor for 46 years. I am beginning to think it may be rebuilt pump of An Farmall A. or maybe even a cub. After closer inspection it does look maybe little smaller than pump I took off and smaller than one on 74 140 also have. I lean toward A. Am now thinking about relacing o rings in original pump and putting it back on and see what it does. Anyone got any thoughts on this from what I described. Always look at Hugh McKay's posts cause he seems to be on mark anywhere 140 or Super A concerned. When I replaced pump it bolted right up no problems. So Im wondering if an Farmall A pump was same as supers and 140's. It look like to me if it was a cub pump would have had problems bolting up. In meantime am going to run some cause need to get some soybeans planted. Don't reckon it would hurt anything ? Appreciate ideas. Thanks...

Avery: I have to conclude that between Hal and Nat, they have it right. As I recall, both those pumps were rated 4.5 gpm, that shouldn't present a problem.

If you have one that is a bit slower, I wouldn't fault it too badly. I always said the Super A, 100, 130 and 140 should have had a bit more lifting capacity and been a wee bit slower.

I appreciate your help. I did not think it was a For a Cub. I wonder if there is way to tell whether it is Thompson or Cessna and wonder what are differnces between and if one is preferred over other. I do have the attachment on back of lift which supposed to give more leverage... Thanks

Unfortunately, I'm going to blow your theory right out of the water, because:

1. The A did not have hydraulics, period. It was not even an option. There was no place to bolt on a pump, even. No flat spot on the engine block, no hole into the timing gear train.
2. The Cub pump will not bolt up to a Super A/100/130/140.

The Super A, 100, 130, and 140 are all essentially the same as far as hydraulics go. You got the correct pump, BUT, there were two different pumps used throughout the history of this particular design. Cessna was one, and there was another whose name escapes me at this point. I'm assuming that there were a couple of differences between the two pumps, probably including volume.

You were probably thinking about the Pesco or Thompson pumps. Hal
