How can I check the timing on my 300U without a timing light?

Randy your pointer is near the crankshaft pulley. To time an engine without useing timing light, do this. . get No.1 on TDC. set pointer to mark on crank pulley by turning engine the direction it runs, then loosen dist.turn ign. on. then you are able to rotate dist. back and forth. next turn it a bit down then start turning up, this is opposite normal running direction or advance. but anyway while advancing you will here the spark in the points.this is when you stop, the instant you hear that spark jump.tighten dist. this is as accurate as atiming light. also make sure yourpoint gap is set first. And YES LLoyd an engine will run with timing off.

I just changed the points that where pitted pretty bad. I can't find a pointer near the fan or generator pully anywhere, maybe it got busted off years ago. Tractor runs good, just wanted to see where the timing was. I haven't had time to take it out and run it now since I put the points in but before it would run 15-20 minutes then run ruff and die.

If it's running and you want to set the timing you need a timing. If it's not running and you want to see if it's in time, you need to pull the #1 plug,cover the hole with your finger, bump it over until it blows your finger out ( you will feel the compression) look for the mark on the front pulley to line up with the timing mark( get it as close as you can ). now pull the dist cap and the rotor should point to the #1 post on the cap.

One step beyond this good tactic:

Put a test light to ground and to the terminal on the distributor. Place the light in a position that allows you to see it when turning the engine slowly in the normal direction.

Put the #1 on compression, but stop rotating when the pointer is about a finger width away from the mark on the pulley. Slowly turn the crank till the light just comes on. This is the Point Opening moment. The pointer should just be at the mark. If not, put the pointer on the mark, loosen the distributor in the mount just enough to turn it. and set it to turn on the light when the housing is rotated opposite of rotor direction. (this may require backing the distributor toward retard some so you can turn it in the opposite direction to just turn on the light. A sputtering light is ok, it indicates you are at the instant of opening.

All this assumes you have the points set correctly, and they are in good shape.

Is the tractor running or not,if it runs what makes you think the timing is off ?
