I have been calling around today to alternator shops to try to find a set of brushes for the starter on my 53 SM. No body has them that wants to sell them. The only guy that has them says to bring in the starter and he can look at in in a couple weeks. Where do you guys buy your brushes for these starters?

Try your local Case IH dealer and ask for part number A20893. I think you will find that is what you want and they are fairly inexpensive.

Brian my 53 SM got to where it would barely turn over, and as you said you needed to hold your mouth just right to catch it. I took the starter into Auto electric in Ft Collins Colorado. On the phone they assured me they had a good rebuilt in stock... NOT !!! But they did rebuild mine in 3 hours. The bushing at the back of the starter had failed and the rotor had cut a notch in the back plate heading for the ground. The upper brushes were not even contacting. It scared the hell out of me when I hit that rebuilt starter. The motor turned over so fast I thought the fan blast was going to pull it out of the shop by itself.. Good luck on geting yours going better. Tallperson

I usually get the brushes from NAPA. If the Delco number on that little tag is still there, that is a big help for getting the right brushes.

Thanks!! I didn't think of NAPA. I will give them a try. I have called every alternator/starter rebuilder in the area. None want to sell parts or do not have them right now (which I cannot believe). That is like McDonalds being out of french fries. I will go to NAPA in the morning.

This SM does start right now, but you have to hold your toung just right. It is a good think that it is tuned up just perfectly and it hits the first time over.

Brian,

I hate places like that. He wants to work on your alternator and not sell you the parts. He has 'em in the backroom by the gross.

One time, I went into an electrical repair shop in Williston, ND. Told the guy I needed a can of contact cleaner.

Oh no, says he. Against the law for me to sell it to you and it has been completely discontinued anyway. You can't find it for sale anywhere. Better let me take a look at your piece of equipment.

No thanks, stopped at the local Wally World on my way home and had found 100 cans of the silly stuff within 5 minutes of walking out of that idiot's store.

Parts house should have them or be able to get them. Take the starter number along (on the oval tag rivited to the field housing) and they should be able to match something up.

Remove one of the old brushes. Put it in your pocket and go visit your nearest starter/alternator shop. Show it to the person there and tell him (or her...) "I need 4 new ones like this".

I can almost guarantee they'll have new ones right there in their brush drawer. (The brushes you are looking for are a common part - they are used across MANY different Delco starter models...)
