Trying to remove steering wheel from my M to replace w/ new one. Got nut off & tried wheel puller. The thing won't budge. Have been told to torch collar on rear of wheel and shock it w/ hose to crystallize the rust inside. Wheel will free up. Is this the right approach? Don't want to crack or warp steering column. Anyone done this or have different suggestion? Thanks.

Use a fine cutoff wheel in your angle grinder or your air die grinder. Just one cut , 30 secs maximum and off it comes. Go lengthwise and just barely into the shaft threads. One little scratch in that shaft won't hurt a thing

One thing I have done on occasion is to use a cutting wheel in my skill saw. Sort of rules out saving the old part but it usuall cut things off real easy since I don"t have a torch.

You can torch the hub into two pieces, or you can just heat the hub to a cherry red and then use your puller.
