Formerly, if she gens okay with the gens Field post dead grounded, that tells me the gen is likely okay as you suspected. In 2 coil VR"s, the one coil is the Cutout Relay while the other is EITHER a Current Control Relay only, but more likely a combination Voltage and Current Control Relay. Its job is to control n regulate field current from the low and high charge states. Dead ground is high charge while resistive ground is low charge, but its actually a lil more complicated then that, theres some pulse width modulation and relay chatter going on also. The base/frame of the VR MUST be well grounded to the genny which, likewise, must be well grounded to the tractor frame. If an ohmmeter were connected between the VR"s FLD terminal and the VR"s case, it would read EITHER like 0 ohms (high charge state) or maybe 2 to 3 ohms (low charge state) depending on where that current control relay is latched in or out which depends on the gennys current output and/or its voltage relative to that of the battery. Sooooo o all that being said, Im gonna go down the same road Bob M did. The VR"s metal case mounting portion MUST be a good ground which means it MUST be well bonded (zero ohms) to the gennys case and the genny must also be well bonded to the tractors frame. The old run a good direct ground wire from the batterys grounded post to BOTH the genny and VR will tell if its a grounding problem. Another possibility is theres a bad or loose or resistive connection between the gennys Field post and the VR"s Field terminal, check that out CHECK THE GENNY N VR FOR GOOD ZERO OHMS CONNECTIONS. The VR"s metal mount must be 0 ohms to the gennys case and the gennys case must be near 0 ohms to the grounded battery post. If the VR has a bad case ground, the genny can still full charge if its field post is tied to a good frame ground, NOTE its normal for the VR to work and cause high charge till the battery is charged then cut back so dotn get too nervous if shes not full charging all the time cuz that will overcharge the battery so maybe its working n the genny n VR are doing their job????? See if turnign lights on causes her to go to the higher charge state Let us know John T
