Crack in my Steering knuckle post model A pictures

here is the pictures of the crack. I can't say how it happened. All I know was when I went to grease it the grease came out in the wrong place. I am worried that If I don't weld it, it could get worse. If you look on both sides of the zerk you can see the grease coming out of the metal. Is there any concerns about welding this? any precautions I need to know? Thanks Ron

Yes Ron the cracks can be welded but you will need to get all the grease away from the area you need to weld. If there is any grease in the welding field it will overwhelm the inert atmosphere created by the flux and the steel will burn instead of weld. You could make the cracks into holes in a hurry. I would drop out the spindle and clean the inside of the tube thoroughly. Then gently heat the area of the crack with a torch to burn out any residual grease. Wire brush the area and then weld. take the time to prep the weld area correctly and you will be much happier with the results. Tallperson

I could be all wet but that just looks to be rusting thru from inside out or outside in, can't really tell.. If it is there's not much saving it. I think I'd just use it. I mean, you'll have to diasasasemble that to clean it up and inspect it inside and out. After having done the disassembly a used replacement might end up the better way to go.

I can't tell about the inside but there is no rust on the out side. What looks like rust is grease my Dad painted over. The metal on the outside looks ok. The thing that i wonder about is welding it with grease in it. I bet it will smoke like crazy, but will it catch fire? Ron

Recommend you don't weld it loaded with grease. If you want to try to weld it, at least give it a chance. Remove the old zerk. Take it apart and clean it up real good so you can see what you have. Drill the ends of the crack, determine the wall thickness, weld up the old zerk hole, grind a weld groove 1/3 into wall thickness hole to hole. weld it. Move the zerk up or down an inch to new location. If that's too much work, leave it alone. It'll crack or it won't. It looks to be full of holes.
