Hey folks I have just purchased a 1934 F-20 Ser# TA135548. It has the duckbill steering gear and rear axle with no step cast in to put your feet on. It is on full steel with the rear ones being the wide type with steel lugs, not cast iron. The guy I bought it from said they made a very few like this with the TA serial prefix in 1934 only. I am wondering if he is for real and why were these special? Thank you.

The Ta serial number tractors (Ta-135000-135661) were f-20s that were made in 1934 the year the depression was in full swing.A decision was made by IH to use up some leftover farmall regular parts, namely the countershaft housing (1523-db)to get their money out of these large expensive parts,IH was trying to keep people employed.A suggestion was made within the company to use a separate serial number series, starting roughly where the farmall regular left off. The first Ta serial number tractor was built december 21,1933,while the last was built in february,1934.Apparently no FA prefix F20s were built during this time. All the Ta series tractors had the Duckbill steering gear cover.

just, i didn't see anyone give you an answer so here goes. i don't have my serial number list handy at this time but the early f-20's had the duckbill steering and that makes the tractor more collectable than some but not rare. the rearend could be regular farmall as they used some on the early f-20's maybe to get rid of stock or because ih did not have enough of the new castings(only my guesses).i have heard of some of these around.still the f-20 is a good tractor to restore and show no matter of the rarity.
