I have been trying to get my Farmall A (Magneto ) to run properly for some time.
Originally it started fine but would stop after about 2 minutes or when it got warm.
We have rebuilt the carby and installed a new coil and condensor ( the points are ok ).

After ensuring the timing was ok as per book It started first go after 15 months ran for two minutes perfectly and abruptly stopped and will not restart.
Any ideas appreciated ..... ..... Paul.

I had that same problem with my '48 S/A. I could remove the mag. clean the points, re-assamble & it would be fine. If I let it set for a month or so the same thing would happen. This went on for over a year.
I finally bought new points from NAPA (Echlin) & have not had any problem since.

Pull the coil wire from the cap and hold within 1/8-1/4" of good ground on the tractor frame. Have someone to crank the engine with the starter
and look for spark from the coil wire. Do this as soon as the engine quits. Make sure the kill switch is in the on position. If there's no fire
remove coil cover and use a flatblade screwdriver to check the magnetism in your magnets. They should attract the screwdriver with some effort.
Hal
PS: If you have fire when it quits check your fuel for blockage.

Thanks guys,

Hal when the coil is removed from its housing there is loads of magnetism in magnets however when coil is inplace there is practically none.
Do you mean the Kill switch should be in the engine run or engine off position ?

Thank you..... ..... ..Paul

The kill switch should be in the engine run position when you're attempting an engine start. I would disconnect the kill switch wire for the time being. Then check the magnets for magnetism.
This is how the magneto creates its fire by the magnets passing by the coil. Hal

Your tractor has to have three things to run: fuel, spark and compression. So, first find out if you are losing your fuel supply or your spark. When it quits, check to see if you have spark right then. If it does, see if the plugs are bone dry. Go from there. mike
