I've been looking for a loader tractor for a small place we have. Could probably make do with smaller Jap tractor, but have always been attracted to, "real," tractors. Sold my CaseIH 485 5 years ago when I didn't need it. Now we have a use for something again. Today was offered a 1984 model year International 584, 4WD, 4,000 hours; traded in by original owner to original selling dealer. Has Freeman Loader (I know nothing about Freeman's) 6-foot bucket. They priced it at $11,900, which I think is high. Any comments? Any troubles with those 4WD's? (My 485 was 2WD). My only use is a lot of gravel maintenance, light tilling, bucket use for working around buildings, cleaning the windbreak (which is where a smaller machine would be better), winter snow and general utility work. I think this would be about 30% too much tractor, but I'm also not sure the extra bulk would hurt anything. Tractor is about a 2 hour drive away, so am trying to learn first what I might be up against. Thanks for comments, Dennis

I really appreciate all the comments and Michael's offer on the IH234. I finally found some photos of the 234's, and apparently they are between 18 and 24hp. I know that's too small for what I need. HP ranges that could work for me would be 35 bare minimum up to around 60 in the right tractor. Compact size would be a great help, and the 584 pushes that some. The Freeman loader bugs me a bit although I realize if it is in good shape and I take care of it it might be OK. OTH, I agree with the comment that because of the brand it doesn't add much to the value of the tractor. Unfortunately, there are few loader tractors for sale around here (NE Washington state). I've owned IH and they worked fine. I found an Oliver 1550 which (for some reason) I love, but they want $5,500 and it has no loader. If I could buy a truly, "built in America," unit, I'd enjoy that (I used to collect Deere's). So I'm still trying to sort all this out with only a few units around here to actually walk up to and see. Dennis

If you could do with a small Jap tractor, I have an IH-234 that I bought new in '87 with 250 hours with loader, 3pt, remotes, hydro and ROPS. email me and I will send you some pictures. I have been needing to get rid of it as it is just taking up space in the barn for the 20 hours per year that I use it. Really slick tractor!!!

Sounds pretty lightweight, but I'd like to know more. What horsepower? And most of all, where are you located?

234 is offset, was produced after the 140 ceased production. More of a cultivating tractor, light duty.

Oh! Forgot. It is lot less than half what they want for the 584.
