This may sound really dumb, but have you checked the air intake system for a restriction? Even a half inch of dirt in the air cleaner cup can cause apparent overfueling. Also, an inside ply on a hose in the intake system could partially block incoming air.

Now i do not know what plugs your are useing but keep this in mind that by leaning out the fuel mixture is not such a good idea as lean is mean and can and will cause more problems . Myself i realy would have to lok at the plugs to see if it is and oil fouling or a fuel fouling . The first steps i would take is use either a C86 A/C plug or go with a autolite 386 or what ever the # is . Second check your ing. timing for full advance at full throttel and make sure that it is where it is suppose to be and maybe add a couple degrees advance . Next upgrade the gas you are useing as i have had more problems with the 87 octain so just for shutts and giggels here try some 89 in it . Myself even in my super H and my Super MTA i run the high priced spread in them and have no problems with fouling . Now also do a real good job on fine tuneing the carb for best ideal at the losest rpm that the tractor will run at and on the main fuel screw set it for the max set . With the gas being differant in some areas tractors run differant on it . Beleive me when i tell ya i have been down this road way tomany times and have spent many hours fine tuneing them to get them just wright . The last couple day i have spent about 23 hours on a 706 gasser that has given me fits back several years ago now it runs like a scalded dog i would have used other words but my head has been beat on way tomany times . You would have to park your donkey on this tractor to get the full meaning of what they use to run like as this one is awesome I service a bunch of gas tractors and i have all of them running like a Singer sewing machine . What most people play with we still farm with them everyday .

I do know that my tractor doesn't fully advance to 22 degrees at 2200 rpm, like the manual says it should, I wasn't sure if this was normal in older tractors or even how to fix this

Well , now this is not that hard of a job here to pull the dist out and set it in a vice to wok on it if you know how to get it back in close enough to get it to run again to reset the timeing . Pull it out and stick it in a vice and remove the three screwws that hole th points plate in and lift it out and look at the two flyweights and the two littel springs and if pices and parts are either broken or missing replace them with Org. parts , look for ware and make sure that the upper part of the shaft moves free a bit as this is suppose to move . Now if you look in the end of the shaft where the rotor sets on there is a small pice of felt in there every sooften one should remove this and place a couple drops of oil in there to lube the shaft Now if this is froze up this could be your problem . It is nice to have a Dist. Strobe to run it and check the advance on a machine as this way ya know what it is doing before it goes on the tractor . Now if the dist. is not doing it's job like it should then this brings on other problems like fouling of plugs late timeing poor performance higher fuel consumption . Now with out running out to the truck and getting my books out i'll let you do the checking on this but you now know where to start . To bad your not close to me or i would come out .

I think you've nailed it I got plugs fouling and high fuel consumption I gonna take the distibutar off tomorrow and take a look, I'll let you know what I find

Wes, I pretty well agree with the good advice below, it helps reduce premature plug fouling if you run the hottest plug available,,,,, use shutters or thermostat or radiator air restrictors etc to get n keep the temperature to 180 and over,,,,, ,,dont run the carb any richer then necessary,,,,, ,,use wire core plug wires and have the ignition well tuned.

Use the hottest heat range you can find, and lean your carb a little. Max power is 5 turns out of the main adjusting screw. Keep turning it in until you get loss of power under load, then open it slightly. This won't help if the fouling is caused by oil. There used to be plugs that would fire in a high oil use tractor, I don't know if they are available anymore.

I did the main adjusting screw but not under load, I guess I really don't know how to do it under load. is using the hydraulics, considered a load

Wes, turn that screw in gently until it bottoms out, then turn it 3 full turns out and leave it there. The only reason to turn it out any further is if the engine stumbles at wide open throttle while under a hard load.

I meant if you can put it under load (maybe as simple as going up a hill), get off and turn it a little at a time (1/4-1/2 turn) until it doesn't stumble, or turn it a little at a time until it does stumble, then back out a half turn or so. I wouldn't try it with the hydraulics. Think of the main screw as a "cut" screw, turn it in until it won't run right with a load, then out until it does. The earlier models, prior to the Super H, could be adjusted while stationary at wide open throttle, then fine tuned in the field as need be. The stationary adjustment won't work with the Super H, 300, and 350.

I had the same problem Wes, and the guys on here steered me in the right direction. Changed to Champion D-21 plugs and no more fouling problems. Harley
