I'm replacing the brakes on my A and have found the trans. seals to be bad on the left side. Lots of gunky grease in the brake area. The seals into the trans. are not cooperating to get them out. Can I pull the seal housing off so I can punch these seals out from the backside??
My fear is the bearing and diff. will drop when I pull this off and I won't be able to get it back up into pos. when putting this back on with the new seals.
Any suggestions?

I have replaced many with two of the new type seal with grease in between the two seals. Works well.

Hi Tom....I did the left brake on my Super A a few years ago. I took the old seal to a bearing/ seal store. They measured the old seal and when I told them the shaft was groved they then suggested a slightly different seal. The new seal has the rubber resting little inboard ( or maybe it was outboard) of where the rubber on the old seal rested on the shaft. Saved me from having to sleeve the shaft. Might be worth looking in to.

yes it will drop, but not completely. if you can't get the seal housing back on then you will probably have to remove the rear tranny cover so you can support the differential. but there may be other ways. some folks use a slide hammer(dent puller) to pull the seals.

Thanks for your reply and advice.
I got a liitle more agressive and got the seal out.
Turns out it was a one piece, two seal unit.
Now to find a replacement.
The no. on it is 46282-??.
I can't make out the digit(s) after the -.
I also noticed the shaft is worn slightly wear the seals rode. I'm not sure this will be a problem but do you know the seal No. in say Chicago Rawhide or a source for them?
I wonder if anyone makes a speedy sleeve repair kit for this.
Thanks again.

I get my seals from the Case/IH dealer, about $15 each. Those origional seals can be hard to get out but the new ones will go in easy. Should seal OK depending on how bad the shaft is worn. Dave.
