Reverse operation rear frame cover

I am trying to help someone out. He could use the '40s style part number on the M derived cotton picker rear frame cover. That is what the seat bolts to. My part's book was printed in April 1954 and only gives me the new number which is 355 184 R31. I want the number for the casting, not the whole kit or assembly.

Found listed in Manual dated 4-30-52 same number you list but R1 . can't find listed in anything I have before then.

Is there a major difference in the covers? Have used cover from 1953 Super M on 1940 M and only thing different I noticed was that couple of the bolt holes for brake cover were not drilled and tapped. IH did not begin large scale cotton picker commercial cotton picker production until 1947 after Memphis works was built and in my area at least pickers did not really take ovewr until fiftys. Looked at 2 hole cover on 1940 M (this would be dealer installed picker) and cover has 315184R3 top with 7*16*F casting code.

Actually commercial production of IH pickers began in 1949 according to Donald Hulley of University of Arkansas @ Monticello who has published excellent paper on mechanical cotton pickers. IH had annoucned in 1943 that they had mechanical picker ready for production but war board would not allot them enough steel to build factory and produce pickers until after WW II.

Actually, a cover from as late as a 560 ot 660 will fit on a '39 M. The shifting forks changed slightly with the SMTA and later.

That's interesting about the start-up date for the cotton picker. If that is true, the two hole lid never carried an old part number and we are looking for something that never existed.

Don't know what to make of 315 184 R3. My numerical index jumps from 306 to 336 and there is only one of those. The next number is 350 and there are at least a hundred of those.

I just checked the "F" year code. It is 1936. That doesn't make any sense.

"P" (1946) rather than "F" (1936) would be more likely and somewhat consistant with what you said earlier.

One row pickers were popular until early sixtys so no reason 1960 cover would not be on picker. Contrary to what some people think many pickers were mounted by dealers on tractors furnished by customer I drove 1944 M that we had used for years to dealer to have high drum picker installed in about 1958.

You are right number on cover is 355184R3 not 315184R3 need to get back to double checking my replys before posting. It is R3 not R31 though I double checked.

Did you try Campbells Used Tractor Parts in Lawrenceburg, TN 931 762 7185(I had them in Fayetteville in my previous post). Mid-South Salvage Inc. Decatur, AL 256 353 5661 might possibly have cover. A lot of the old picker tractors have gone through sale in Sikeston, MO as salvage so yards in that area might have one. Have seen several posts in last couple of years of people looking for covers so they may be about all gone.

I may be mistaken but I believe 400 (and maybe later tractors) has the 2 hole cover with reverse shifter bosses cast in but they are not drilled and tapped. Would think 400 covers could be found and any good machine shop could drill and tap the holes and modify shifting forks. Looked at 400 2 hole cover and it carries 361977R1 part No. This is just my opinion based on no real facts.

You are right on the 400 and later lids. I have aleady offered to do that for C Kennedy but I am sure it will be cheaper for him to buy a two hole reversed lid made prior to 1954. I have a nice (meaning wide) 560 row crop lid and the machine shop to do the work. While I would like to get rid of my lid and add value to it, I think C Kennedy will save hundreds of dollars buying one already changed over at the factory. He needs to find a salvage yard in cotton country.

In this situation, you would have been better to start a new thread or emailed me.

Glad you are finding your part. Hopefully, it is close by so you don't incur shipping charges. I think the shipping might be worth more than the lid. Be curious to know what the owner wants for the part.
