I just rebuilt my B and I had everything apart and cleaned. I was thinking that some how engine oil gets to the distributor but at a local tractor show a B had a grease fitting in place of a set screw in the dist. housing. Do I need to shoot some grease in there? I looked at other A's, B's and even C's and none had a grease fitting. Where does the gear drive get it's lube?

Thanks Jeff

Jeff: Cowman is right, too much grease has always been a problem with those. The manual calls for a very small amount of grease every 6 months or 500 hours of operation. That is why most of them don't have zerks. IH basically recomends putting a zerk in temporarily at greasing time. That way it doesn't get greased every time the rest of tractor does. The distributor shaft housing has a small hole on back side, They recomend 4 to 6 pumps or until you see grease out that small hole. The drive housing call for several pumps of gun.

Around 1960, I had an IH technician recomend to me using white automotive grease on these. I've been using that close to 45 years now, and I would recomend it. I've seen these taken apart with regular gun grease being used, wall of grease around the case and none in vital points. The white grease stays in the small drive parts much better. I expect moly grease would work well. Lot of new lubes on market since these tractors were built.

Jeff: I never bother with grease zerks, I buy the white grease in squeeze tubes. Remove the plug, and slide tip of tube in until closes the hole, and squeeze some grease in. It's quick, it's clean and easy.

Another one that folks often overlook is the fan hub oiling.

These two items tend to get overlooked by many owners of tractors with C-113 and C-123 engines. Then there is the other side, guys put Zerks in the distributor and over grease.

yes, you can shoot some grease in there, but not too much and not too often. That's why there's a plug in the hole and not a zerk.
