My 42 H has the curved pipe, small coil spring in front of seat. I like the other kinds better.

The original gas cap sholud not be used, Unless someone is extreme on original looking dangerous products. The replacement free caps are the ticket. If anything is left of the tractor division it is the free cap you can still get. The original caps leak (ruining paint, and making a fire hazzard). Though rare, the problem was serious enough to cause IH, and legacy owners of the name, to provide free caps. I know of no one that would demand the old cap. (if you istill want the old one, several people on this site might give you one for the mailing when they replace theirs. I think the seat was a coil spring mounted curved pipe with a triangular sheetmetal bin in the curve. (I may be wrong on the seat mount) JimN

JIM - The reason for the new triple baffle caps with the quarter-turn safety pressure release isn't because the old caps leaked, because that's more of a problem caused by the tank. The old low profile cap was basically the same as Every other ag. equip. company used. IH started using the triple baffle cap sometime in the late 50's, which was better than the caps the other companies used...and the new "Safety Cap" is identicle except for the two catches where You have to turn the cap a quarter turn, lift then turn again to remove. Similar to a radiator cap.
The whole gas cap program was to prevent rapid release of gasoline vapor pressure in the tanks which could draw raw gasoline out as well, but THAT was the hazard... That and smoking while fueling a gasoline tractor....
