Dose anyone know why they paint JOHN DEERES green. It's so they can hide in the grass when the red ones drive by.

It seems like yesterday when that addition went up for the FFA SHOP & CROPS at the Wayne Co.fairgrounds I went down with My shop teacher and put the original blue letters over the doors if I remember right it was 1980 and that 4430 would have not far off being a new one 4 or 5 years old It dont seem possible

I really like my old farmalls to play around with and restore but have spent my far share of hours on the 20, 30, 40 and 50 series grean tractors and will not say anything bad about them. as old grean ones go Ive always said if I wanted to run on 2 cylinders id pull 2 off on my farmalls. I tent to like alot of different brands of tractors for different reasons, shoot I even own a green one but not deere green. my favorite tractor is not a red one, it has to be detroit powered oliver...something about that roar

You guys ever meet one of those "World's biggest Deere fan" types, with the hats, and t-shirts and mud flaps. Then come to find out all they got is a model 318 riding mower!

G Johnson: Why wouldn't you do your Deere bashing on the Deere page, only cowards do it here.

Ease up, Hugh. "Cowards" is a pretty strong word.

It is joking, not bashing, and it is funny. The color of the tractor is different than your skin color, height, weight, disability, etc, it is just iron. Over on the Deere page it may just offend someone who does not know it is in good humor. (Probably one of the non-owner participants, but they still have the right to participate).

The Deere guys generally think they own the only "collectible" tractors (that may be true) so those who can't afford John Deere's "collect" something else. I would never do anything to belittle their basic beliefs but with that attitude "Deere bashing" comes off as jealousy that I don't have a Deere. It doesn't matter that I do own some.

When I go to shows, I do ask the Deere guys, in person, "Why are there more Deeres in collecitons than Farmalls?" (The Farmalls are still working) I always get a good response.

Andy: I realize where they are coming from, I just tend to look at tractors a bit differently than most folks on these forums. In their heyday, these old tractors were only as good as the local dealer, yes that guy right in your hometown, made or destroyed any particular make.

I had an excellent IH dealer in my day, have owned 16 different Farmalls, and can really only get excited on about half of them. I had a very average Deere dealer, early in my career. That changed, and I bought one Deere. I can only say good things about it. Had I stayed in farming there would have been a lot more Deere. I guess a lot more folks in my hometown must have been thinking same as I. Today there is a top notch Deere dealer and no CaseIH dealer. In fact the closest CaseIH dealer is 120 miles. Local Agco dealer sells IH parts to the diehards, but wont touch the dealership.

Yep, the dealer is the deciding factor alright. I think John Deere makes some mighty fine products, but the local dealer service department I don't care for, their service manager is this overweight woman who is pretty lazy and always makes accusations of us messing something up that they are working on to try and get out of their mechanics mistakes, they got a bunch of young guys barely out of high school in there and they are not very good mechanics, I had to pay for some of their mistakes. From my experiences with John Deere on a lawn tractor and a lawnsweeper, I would hesitate to buy anything more from them. Case IH, they have my tractor right now as a matter of fact, their service department is alot better, the people are more friendly, and I got friends behind the parts counter, so I am pretty happy with them and feel welcomed. Kinda funny how some folks are so stuck on a certain brand, I guess since I have worked on other peoples farms and I have driven alot of different brands, I have formed an appreciation for them all. I know a family that everything they have is John Deere, and it actually surprised everyone that back last year they purchased a CASE skidsteer when John Deere offers them, perhaps they are getting sick of the JD dealer too?. I guess I am kinda lucky because I got a Massey Furgueson dealer about 3 miles away, Case IH and John Deere are about 8 miles away, and an Agco/Zetor Dealer about 10 miles away.

My experience is that folks mostly bought what was closest to them. We had Ford and IH available but you had to go quite a way to get a Deere.

You still find the color tractor predominates in the areas around where the old dealers were. Whe you start seeing Allis' in the windrows, you'll see more in that area, same with IH, Massey, MM, Oliver. Here in OK I don't think there were any MM dealers, and they are still few and far between.

I don't have a Case dealer, have to use a guy in Mo.
