What rear hitching device or combination of hitching devices do you have for your tractors. I'm thinking along the lines of U drawbar, with or without swinging drawbar? Do you have one point fast hitch? Do you have a 3 point kit? If so, is it adapted to U drawbar, no drawbar or 1 point fast hitch? Do you use rear mounted cultivators, attached to final drives? Are you satisfied with what you have?

I would enjoy any input you have to offer, personal e mails are invited. I have been playing around with several different proto types this summer. My goal is to come up with a device to have all three, U drawbar, one point fast hitch and 3 point hitch, and be able to switch from one to either of the other in 5 min. without the use of wrenches. I'm curious as to how important such a device would be.

I bought a Super A and it came with a "3 pt hitch" on it. I think it was TSC or Central Tractor.
Has a piece that bolted across the back of the U
drawbar with latches on each end to hook the imple-ment on. Also each end was bent up at a 90 degrees with a 3/4" hole. Then it had heavy flat
stock that went up and hooked to the lift arms on
the rear fenders. The top link hooked to a pipe
that was welded between the heavy plates that the
U drawbar hooks to. It actually worked quite well. Lays out in front of the garage right now.
Thinking about putting it on E-bay.

We have two 140's and a Super A that I restoring. On the 140's one has a fast hitch and one has the draw bar, we never change them.

On the Super A I am working on I want cultivators on it but I also have the U draw bar and the swinging draw bar arm.

Hugh, I just dont see a way to have both but I have an idea.

The anchor bar for the swinging arm is pretty stout built so why not use it as the draw bar. Mount it on the top holes on the final drive above where you normally would for the U draw bar. It would be up higher which might or might not be good. I know I would use the lug nut type nuts to secure them and not just bolts.

Another idea would be to have a bar made that would fit betwenn the two arms of the cultivators where you could take it on and off. Cultivator brackets dont appear as heavy built tho as the draw bar brackets.

Hi Hugh
I have 3 Super As, one has just u shaped drawbar, one has u shaped with swinging drawbar, 3rd has Worksaver 3 point hitch. I like the 3 point hitch but would have liked to retain the u-shaped drawbar with it. Keep working on the project, I need one!

Hugh,

I have a 49 SA with both the U-drawbar and swinging tongue option. I also have a 1000 loader for it, which requires removal of both. I would like to be able to keep the loader frame on the tractor, but remove the arms, and still have a means to use pull type implemants. Thus a three point arangement would be very useful if it was a quick-change setup.

Now...when it comes to plowing, it would be a nice option to have a single-point fast hitch rather than having to reverse the u-bar to afix the plow beam.

You are on a good quest. Good luck.

Hugh:

On Super A #1, I have an aftermarket 3-point hitch, bottom arms of which mount on the final drive housings in the same location as the original drawbar. It, in turn, is fitted with a (3-point) drawbar with an attached triangular frame (ebay - $39) and toplink to keep it level. It works great and is very convenient for backing under trailer tongues, etc. I also use a 60" finish mower (3-point) on this tractor and am very satisfied with the entire set-up, despite early concerns about the additional angle of the PTO shaft due to the offset design of the tractor. I also have an IH "U" drawbar for this tractor, but never seem to need it.

Super A #2 has front and rear cultivators on it, but also has an IH "U" drawbar - not on the tractor for now.

Neither tractor has a swinging drawbar. I keep thinking I would like a 1-point fast hitch system, but then there is the matter of finding the 1-point system and aquiring or making 1-point implements, etc. So, I have not pursued that - at least not yet. Moreover, the 3-point system seems to work so well, I am not sure I really need a 1-point fast hitch. As you know, the selection of 3-point implements available in the market today makes the 3-point set-up even more desireable - at least to me.

Hope this provides the information you requested.

Hi Hugh...I have a Worksaver aftermarket 3 pt on my Super A and the u drawbar factory hitch. Very handy. I did have to install longer studs in the axle housing to accomodate having both the 3 pt mounting plate and the u drawbar mounting plate. I don't use the IH rear cultivators, but instead use a 1 row 3 pt cultivator (with the IH mid -mount cultivators.) That way I never have to remove the 3 pt/u draw bar hitch. (Well almost never!) The only "hitch" with this set-up is sometimes when I'm cultivating a tall crop the u drawbar is low enough to the ground to hit the crop. To solve that I modified my drawbar so that it can be removed easily with out removing the mounting plate. Pete

Hugh, I have combinations of all rear hitches and setups. I use a Super A with the U drawbar. I have a 140 with a one point hitch, and a 274 with a three point hitch. The fast hitch is really good to hook to a trailer with a jackstand with a ball hitch. Just back under it and lift. I have moved many without getting off the tractor to hitch or unhitch. It is not good with any trailer or above ground implement that is heavy because it tends to sway from side to side. The u bar for the Super A is more stable since it is fixed. One can cultivate with the fast hitch on the 140, but only when stuff is small. There is not much ground clearance. Sometimes I put a hitch bar to the 3 point lift arms of the 274 if the one point is off the 140. The 274 also uses a U drawbar. It can be used without removing the 3 point hitch. These are used alot for gardening and tobacco. The different setups are very helpful.

Hugh:

My A has a 5 ft 3 blade IH belly mower, same for 100. I don't believe either have a drawbar installed as the mower mount interfered. SA has only a U drawbar.

I find this size tractor too small for field work for me because they are too rough riding and too slow geared for haying. I have raked with an A, throttled down in fourth but the field needs to be really smooth and mostly I bale prairie hay, lots of holes and ground rock.

Hi Hugh, I've just got the U shaped draw bar on my '53 Super A. The only factory equipment I have for it are a set of two way ploughs and a rear mounted finger bar mower, both of which are a pain in the backside, especially the mower. To be able to have all three would be brilliant. tractorsam (in NS)

P.S. - My current solution to my desire for a 3pt. has been to buy another tractor. I found one last night so I now have a Massey again.
