Model 784 repair issues/suggestions

I am trying to fix several issues on a 784 which I purchased after having sat outside and neglected for many years. Here are two issues which are causing me some headache: (1). Replacing the boot on the IPTO control collar to IPTO stem (at the MCV assembly). The lock pin (or med coiled spring as the parts manual calls it) is frozen and I cannot just hammer out (lack of adequate working room to get at without taking off the wheel and fender). I should get out eventually by making a fixture to press out but was wondering if I could just turn out the valve stem guide nut and then work on getting the pin out on the bench? If looks as if the control valve stem may "spring" out and then leave me with a greater headache trying to reassemble. (2). After freeing up the diff lock pedal to rotate at the clevis (was rusted), I still cannot engage the diff lock by standing on the pedal. Can I put some added force externally on the diff lock shaft or do I have to go internally and see what may prevent it's engagement?
Any help someone with experience working on these two issues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks jb2 for your reply - you must be one of the ONLY 784 owners who works on his tractor. I still have NOT got the diff lock shaft freed up yet at the case - will keep on with the penetrating oil and taps. I gave up on the IPTO boot replacement via taking hardware off. Will probably split boot and place over shaft and retain by super glue and rubber bands. Beats not having anything on that shaft (other than keeping unit inside all the time).

Mich John, Re diff lock, sometimes the activating shaft seizes were it goes thru the differential case. Penetrating oil and light taps with a hammer.

Sorry, never worked on PTO mechanism.
