the original h pistons were cast iron. they have more than likely been replaced with aluminum pistons.

Maybe the first run of H's but all that i have been into have had the Zollnar forged alu. And if ya ever get into one that has never been down and ya find a Z in a circle on the piston on the side of it that is what came from the factory and what was used for rebuild and what was sold over the counter before I. H. closed down now ya get Clevit with a I H part # stamped in it and they are Cast alu. A cast alu. piston will not transfer heat to the skirts and to the wall and water jacket as a forged piston will.

Actually the original pistons & sleeves for the H were made by Thompson Products. They also made IH's valves, springs, guides, and other misc. IH also did some contracting with Perfect Circle at this time also (& Later.. as a note, 4-5/8" 650D Sleeves were made by PC I have a copy of the blueprint). Zollner did make Most of the Aluminum pistons for the MD-24, with the remainder comming from Thompson Products. As far as gas pistons & sleeves, Zollner started making them for IH sometime around the introduction of the firecraters. Gould/Clevite also did some contracting with IH before their current run, with the only examples I have seen being 4.5" Step head pistons for the 600-650 Gas tractors (zollner made most). As a note, IH also had Wellworthy (England) make pistons & sleeves for the gas & diesel tractors.

Well it just seam like everything i have ever seen had the Z on them and i was going by what i was told by a old I H parts man . And i just know that the org. stuff was forged and now a days it is cast and can not take the heat of this gas as here i have been down the road and spent a buch of money for LAB work tryen to figure out why we keep having the same old problems with the new pistons as we still run a buch of gassers doing heavy tillage and have found out the main cause for the problems and it was the gas , now that we have come up to what I. H. Rec. we have not had the problems as lo as the fuel supplier does not bring out 87 by mistake if he does then i can garantee that before ya get a 1000 lbs of corn thru the grinder mixer of make the other end of the field with the plow there will be pistons melted . BTDT way to many times. Also had many hours on the phone to Clevit over this and they realy don't care as they know that either your going to buy more parts or not and they here again don't care .
