I have three cows that are overdue on calving. They are 4 years old and have each had two calves, no problems either time.My SIL and I were talking and he got wondering if they were in calf, I'm pretty sure they are, but we got arguing about some stuff. If a cow is not getting good nutrition could she become sterile? Could she not come into estrogen if she was not nourished adequately? They were on hay , cracked corn and mixed grain all through last fall and winter. They have been on pasture all summer and we feed rounds in the feeder when the pasture gets down. They have salt and mineral in front of them all the time and I have started feeding a bit of cracked corn and rolled mixed grain mixed together. I have not seen any cows in heat as they all have summer calves, except for these three that I just think are late..SIL doesn't agree with me. I believe it is quite possible that they could go into November or December before they calve. I don't want to involve the vet , I'm sure they are just late. For the sake of the argument, what reasons would there be for a cow not to be in calf ? (My Bull Works so that's not it.)

A good mineral program will fix most all breeding troubles even when they are thin.

Yes, a cow in poor condition will not come in heat. But at this time of year on pasture unless you are starving them you should see some action if they are not bred. Either that or you bull is no good. We have some trouble with young cows not breeding back the first time as they are getting their adult teeth and slill growing frame. But at 4 years old there is no reason for them to be late. I'd put wheels under them. Poor performance is hereditary.

Do you have a squeeze chute? If i was really wanting to know i would reach in and see if i could feel a calf. Some times a cow will miss a heat cycle or was not in heat long enough for the bull to service. I am no expert by no means but for the sake of arguement.

I leave my bull with the cows year round. summer calves don't grow off too good for me. But i still get a few.
