On an IH 5488, I need some info on the motor. I am getting water into the oil. Does this motor have sleeves, or a straight bore? It has never been rebuilt, but looks like it is going to have to be now.

Any thoughts on why this may be happening?

thank you.

Here is the list of things to check , Drop the pan and let her drip for a couple days till all the oil is done drippen pull the valve cover and pressure up the cooling system to 15-20 lbs. and start looken . the reason i said to pull the valve cover is i have found a couple DT 414-466's that the soft plugs in the top of the head to be leaking and if they leak then it goes stright to the pan . So if it is not the sleeves and ya don't have to do a major on the engine at least roll in a set of rods and mains. Also there is a chance that and injector well is leaking .

It is also common for the oil cooler to let water into the oil on those engines. bill

Yep, it's got wet sleeves. Leaking cylinder sleeve o-rings are about the most common source of coolant leaks.

They have sleeves and they do erode. Pull the pan and pressurize the rad. some and look under there and see if you can tell which one is leaking. But the best bet is to replace them all.
