F-12 running rich

Gentlemen,

Our FFA Chapter has recently inherited a decent running F-12 tractor. For some reason (and we haven't had the carburetor off yet) it keeps running rich at anything other than idle. It will idle perfectly all day, but as soon as you throttle the engine at all, it will start to load up. I have turned the main jet screw all the way in to lean the mixture and the tractor will die.

I'l just looking for suggestions before we tear into the carburetor next week. I'm thinking something related to the float or needle/seat, possibly fuel pump?

Thanks for helping a teacher out,
Jared Jeffries
Jasper, MO FFA

BTDT!!!! First dont turn the idle screw all the way in. It could be worn just enough that VERY,VERY fine adjustments are needed.I also used an extra "gasket" on the seat assembly, someone on here suggested that a few years back, since the floats have been hanging for years and may not be adjustable enough any more.(That is solved by a new flaot, which I now have) Also put Autolite 3077 plugs in it.

Float setting is pretty touchy on these old gals. I expect that once you get the carb apart, thoroughly cleaned, and reassembled with the float set correctly, your problems will go away.

That being said, chances are she'll ALWAYS run a little rich, as most were indeed dual fuel, and the carb is jetted quite a bit richer to allow for the kerosene/distillate it normally ran on. It should still run okay, not fuel-fouling plugs or smoking black smoke, but it'll definitely have an appetite for the gas.

Ok, this is just my experience, yours may be different. Mine was a gas only tractor. There is a fuel line from the bottom of the tank to the fuel pump, then the fuel pump to a tee in the top of the gas line, then another line from that tee to the carb. When I first rebuilt mine(also my first tractor), I went from the fuel pump directly to the carb. The float and needle could not hold back the flow from the fuel pump and I experienced the same symptoms you describe. Once I plumbed through the tee, everything was fine. Good luck, Kevin

As far as I know the F-12 was meant to start on gas and then be switched over to distillate and wonder if that might be a factor. When operating our F-12 we did not worry about things so minor as a rich mixture, we were mostly happy if it just ran. Am sure you will get some help from someone here.
