Well, I am just about to roll the dang thing in a hole. Last year my loader M had the clutch and presure plate fly apart, fixed that, then it had steering problems , the problem was the steering gear in the bolster was locked tight, so I just acquired another bolster with a good bearing, but didnt get it put in until this fall, got it in , got the wide front back on, put fluids in it, new battery, new wires while I was at it, hit the switch, LOCKED!!!!. I have had tractors that have been sitting for years, start right up with just a new battery, well enough venting about my sorrows, what my question is, what is the best, over the counter or home made concauction, stuff to free cylinders. Thanks for any ideas

One more thing to look at, would be stuck valves. I doubt that one being stuck would stop the motor from rolling over, but two of them might. I removed a starter, and then used a long pry bar to roll a motor over just to make sure it wasn't stuck and bent a rocker arm.

Have seen too long of bolt used in bracket mtg at bellhousing on SM and 3020 Deere. Eng"s were locked by bolt touching flywheel. On M, after removing picker mtg, bolts were screwed back in tractor for "safe keeping" Same on Deere except cult brackets. Did you have side rails off to replace bolster?

Diesel. Nothing is cheaper.

If I have a tractor that is gonna be sitting for a while I put a couple squirts of oil on top of the pistons though. Hopefully it goes down beside the pistons and keeps the moisture from building up.

If she's only set up lightly once you've put your weapon of choice into the cylinders try jacking up one rear wheel, just clear of the ground. Stick her in fifth gear and rock the wheel back and forth. I've had good luck with this in the past. Hope this helps, tractorsam

I would make sure that the starter will work by testing with a set of jumper cables. A little marvel mystery oil never hurts to be put in the cylinders.

Even if the starter is the problem I would still put the tranny fluid in the cylinders just to loosen up the rings and also prelube the cylinders.

Thanks for your comments, I thought about the starter, pulled it and it is fine and I did try turning it with the hand crank, no go, and pulling it is a problem because of the loader bucket is down. I will try the ATF and try it in a couple of days. Thank you

Partner if it was running when you yourself shut it down I bet it is not the engine that is locked... Pull that starter and see if it wedged in the flywheel or as others have said the bendix is stuck and she is still engaged... But removed the starter before you try pulling it so nothing else gets busted ... Been there.. Makes you feel really stupid... I just hate that... Good luck Tallperson

Is the engine stuck or is the starter engaged to the flywheel and locked up?First Iwould loosen the starter and see if that solves the problem,if not you could try Marvels,ATF,or my weapon of choice denatured alcohol.Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

The bendix on your starter might be locked up, this has happenned to me on two of my tractors. Try putting it in 4th or 5th gear, rock the tractor at the rear wheels and see if that doesn't disengage the starter.Randy

Did you try turning the engine over by hand or pull starting it? I assume you did, but your statement of "hit the starter...locked" made me wonder.

Reason I ask is that from what I read on here it's pretty common for starters on M's to stick. If you're lucky, maybe that's what's wrong with yours and the engine is actually fine.

If all else fails and you decide to just go ahead and roll it in a hole, let me know and I'll come take it off your hands. We've got some nice big holes and it'll save you from getting in trouble with the enviromentalists. :)
