424 PTO problems

I have A 424 international that the PTO can be engaged or dis-enaged without engaging the clutch. The gentleman I bought the tractor from used a bungy cord to hold it engaged when he used the tractors PTO, I would like any suggestions of what could possible be wrong because I don"t feel this is safe at all. Any help would greatly appreciated. And thanks in advance.

I have the same problem on my 424. The pto works, but the lever doesn't stay engaged like it should. From my examinations of the pto service book, there are 2 possible causes. Option #1 is the sliding gear/coupler that engages the PTO inside the tractor is worn/broken. This requires splitting the tractor to fix (I think). Expensive/laborious. Option #2 is the PTO shift lever is not working properly. This is much cheaper, and somewhat more likely to have problems. The pto lever has 2 spots that seem problematic. One is the pin/clamp mechanism where the lever attaches to the shaft. If this slips then when you shift the lever it is only engaging part way. This could lead to problem #1 (broken/worn coupler). The other potential problem with the lever is the little spike that is welded on and drags against a groove on the transmission. This spike creates friction and is supposed to hold the lever firmly in the shifted position. But if there is any slop in the lever then it doesn't provide the friction needed to hold the pto engaged, and again my lead to condition #1. If your pto is working properly and does not slip under hard working conditions, then the bungee is just doing the work of the friction spike. Heating and bending on the spike/shift lever, or tightening the slop out of the lever will likely fix your problem. Does anyone else have experienced with this?

I believe the 424 is like the 444 and has a 2 stage clutch. Not being able to engage or disengage without pressing the clutch all the way down is normal. Damage will happen if you kick the PTO in or out without depressing the clutch.

If the PTO won't stay engaged then the engagement dogs are probably rounded off already and will need replacing.
