Hi, I recently purchased an International 650 Diesel. This is the type of diesel engine that starts on gas then runs on diesel. I have been told by some to switch it back to gas before shutting it off, this way it will start easier, and it does. However, others say you should never dump gas into a hot diesel engine since it can crack the head. I was wondering what other people thought.
Thanks for your responses.

you should shut it down on the gas cycle and after you shut it off put the lever back in the diesel running position to close the starting valves.

Having the starting valves on their seats to prevent warping is of course the most important reason to switch it back to diesel if you run it on gas for a bit to cool it off.

Also though- if you leave the lever on the gas side when you shut it off, it'll run the battery down.

Shutting off on gas can cause warping of the decompression valves, I always shut mine off on diesel, never had any trouble starting except for a little blue smoke.

You should let the diesel cycle cool down to the point where it is safe to shut the 650 off, then shut it off on gas. I have run several of these IH gas start diesels since the early 50's and never had a head problem yet. We still have five of them, SMD (bought new), WD6, W450, WD9, and 600.
