1951 Farmall M w/ 9 speed Question

Is this considered rare to find a M with a 9 speed? Does anyone have any idea how many were made with the 9 speed? What would be a fair price? This is a 1 owner tractor, fenders, belt pulley, lights, narrow front, straight hitch, grill has some minor dents, other tin is straight, tires are about 20%.

The three companies that I know of that made the 9 speed were,M and W, they had operating linkage on the right side, Heisler, there's was on the left side and Behlen ,they used cable linkage,It entered the transmission thru the top left bolt in the torque tube.They drilled a hole thru the bolt and put a small compression fitting around the cable. Inside they are pretty much the same, Travel speeds are about the same.

There is much in the archives on this subject. It is an aftermarket item most commonly built by M&W. Adding the one owner and fenders make it more attractive than most also. What's fair is relative to how much you want it.

The 9-speed is very handy. Note that you have to shift in and out of it while stopped.

Hi , I wouldn't consider them rare as IH/Farmall never offered a 9-speed . As far as I know they are all aftermarket add-ons . The factory offered a 7mph 4th gear and a low-low 1st . M&W is the brand I have in my M . It's a cable shift . They also made lever shift types . A couple of different companies made them for the M and H and possibly others .

Don't know where you're at but if the paint is good and everything else checks out it MIGHT go as high $2500 but I'd say closer to 1500-1800 . Then again you have to take the poor tires into consideration . If you have to replace them that's almost as much as the tractors worth ($600-800) . Others here that trade tractors a lot more than me can pin it down closer than me maybe . I got mine off ebay for $935 . But it has a lot of issues . It runs great but the tranny needs bearings and the front pedestal needs rebuilt and it has mismatched tires , they're weather checked but have good tread . HTH ...Randy

tell us more about the low/low and the higher 4th gears. Do they fit other models? Where can we find one? Thanks.

Check out the transmission very carefully. Parts for a M&W 9 speed are very hard to find. ken
