My boss asked me last nihgt if I wanted to buy his H w/ loader for $1500. Right away I figure anything with a loader is worth atleast that. Right now it's sitting on 2 flat rears, but he's got some other ones mounted on a different set of rims that need to be put on yet. NO idea on the condition of the engine. About how much HP do they have? We're more of a Massey and oliver farm, but our loader needs some down time to get a bunch of things fixed up on it. I figure the worst we could do was use it while fixing our 165 then sell it right after.

I'm not sure if this thing has PS or not either. Are they hard to steer like every other model w/out PS?

I may have to go out and look at it sometime, but I'm not sure the last time it ran. I think it's been a while.

Finally, here's a close-up of the front door of my grandparent's house after 49 blizzard....grandad got out of the house through a west window initially...

Also of interest, Allen mentioned that they still farmed with horses then. Around here, no farming, but most everyone fed hay in the winters with horses...and the old-timers always say that the '49 blizzard was what got everyone to finally switch from feeding with horse teams to go to tractors.....not sure why, but that's always mentioned as the turning point, at least in these parts.

H is around 25 HP give or take a little. As far as price for the most part you can buy an H for $1000 in good running shape. Most Hs don't have power steering and if the loader is run off the Hs hyd pump you push the clutch down and you also loose hyds, non line hyds on them.

After first snow, about 15th of Nov., roads weren't open again south of Broken Bow 'till spring. No mail delivery for about two weeks when trails were opened up on pasture ridges. Those trails suficed as highways 'till spring. Walked two miles to and from school, stepping across telephone wires - yes, uphill both ways. No REA yet. Drove steel posts in snow banks above first fence to keep cattle and pigs in. Nearby, hay was dropped from airplanes to feed cattle.

I think that it would have to be in real good shape and good rubber on it before I would pay the $1,500.00. As mentioned, a good running one can be bought for $1,000.00 or less. The loader..I dont know what it is worth installed.

Don't beat yourself up so much. There will be a day and a place where there is no hurt or suffering of any kind. Just keep focused and know that it will be overcome.

Have you checked the pressure the pump has? If it is in good shape it sure will raise anything you can hook up. Now if you think you need down pressure you will have to add a two-way valve in the system. That will be an easy fix. Too bad you found bad advise.

Re: 986 Clutch Slipping in reply to BradM, 01-13-2007 10:04:06
Hi Brad, is it crankcase oil or Hytran fluid leaking out the inspection plate? If it is crankcase oil then it is probably rear main oil seal. If Hytran then probably like others have indicated it is seal on PTO/Transmission drive shaft.
On my brother's 684 we had both cases, ever since new it would leak a little crankcase oil especially if it had been used on a field with a steep hill. The first time we did a clutch job we took off the flywheel and the cap screws on the rear mail oil seal were loose..tightened to spec and no more leaks. Last year the T/A went bad and he had it replaced by an X-IH mechanic and then it started to leak Hytran. Mechanic came back and split the tractor again and replaced the seals on PTO/transmission drive shafts and no more leaks. Mechanic claimed he had replaced the same seals when he did the T/A job.

Hope this helps
JimB
