I need a 120 hp or more tractor. found a nice 1256, no cab, poor paint, mechanicly sound, good tires.
also found a 1466,recently overhualed, ratty cab, poor paint, fair tires. I personally like the 12 better. Will the 14 use more fuel if used on same size equipment then the 1256. the 1466 is a 71. 1256 is 68.
What would be better buy? 1256 at $6750 or 1466 at $5700. Thanks for your input...

First of all the 1256 doesn"t exceed the 120 hp mark. The 1466 would be the smarter option be cause not only is it capable of handling larger jobs it also would be a more economical choice because parts are cheaper and it would be more fuel efficient. Also it won"t always be stressed under greater horsepower demands which the 1256 might be in some cases.

The 1256 is overpriced by about $2000 in its current condition.

The 1466 is underpriced by about $2000 in its current condition. (overhaul of a DT400 series will run around $6k if done by a shop) If they can provide proof of the overhaul, buy that 1466 before someone else does!!

If both tractors were in similar condition and priced the same, I would prefer the 1256, but just because I like the 56 series and we have a 1256 already... Just my thoughts.

the 1466 is a better tractor. the engine is from the family of the best mid size diesel engines that anyone has ever built. the transmissions are the same, 756 through 1486.

Go with the 1466.
It has a much better engine and with a little fix up will be worth much more than you are paying.
All the money in the world poured into the 1256 won`t increase its value.
Overhauling a 1256 engine is not a fun or cheap proposition if you ever had to.

If the overhaul is documented on the 1466 its the ONLY WAY TO GO, especially given the prices.

The 1466 will probably use less fuel then the 1256 on the same equipment - unless its very undersized for both tractors. If you're pulling a small square baler the 1256 might do better, but if you're pulling a 20' 496 the 1466 will probably do better.
