Be sure it is filled (as below) and run it for several hours/day, over a period of two weeks. If no better, do as Old indicates. If no better, ignore it until it gets better, or much worse. I would put 15-30 oil in it, if it has not been changed. JimN

Need more info to be sure what the problem might be. If it sat with out running for say a year or more its likely to be caused by stuck rings, if thats the case fill the cylinders with tranny fluid and let it sit a few days. Then pull the plugs back out, always put the plugs back in keep dirt etc out. Then pull the plugs and turn the engine over to clear the cylinders. If that helps then you know the rings had been stuck

Several questions (no offense, it is needed to help correctly)

How much do you know about gasoline engines?

does it get run for more than an hour at a time?

Does the tractor run well, or misfire on one or more cyl.

Have you pulled the plugs to "read them"

Things I would do. (after assuring oil in the engine is up to full, coolant is up to about 1.5 inches from the neck of radiator)

1] run it for an hour doing something important and working the engine. Observe the amount of smoke, and take notes.

2] If it smokes hard, I would pull the plugs and keep them in order then describe each in your notes as to color and substances on the working tip.

3] I would take a compression check on each cylinder (throttle open ignition off) write it in the notes.

4] get back to us for further analysis. all remaining ideas need this first info.

Here is what he e-mailed me:

it runs blue for several seconds and then clears up. I figured it was valve guides, but my uncle rebuilt the motor 3 years ago and it had been sitting idle since then. All spark plugs look good after trying to get it to stay running. No fouling or slick plugs.

The oil stays in there even after it is run? Does it smoke blue when it is started, but then seems to get better after running a while? That is a symptom of valve guides leaking. If it constantly keeps smoking then it is more likely to be caused by a bad oil control ring letting the oil get into the combustion chamber.
