Farmall A - speed surging

I have a 1945 Farmall A which runs very well but has a touchy governer. (I think)
The problem is that if I increase the throttle too fast the speed of the engine speed will surge up and down. It usually doesn't calm down to a steady speed unless I back off the throttle and raise it again slowly.
Anyone have any remedies for this?

The best remedy is to get you a good service manual which will have all the governor adjustments in it. On the bottom of the governor unit there is a cap and lock nut. This is the surge bumper that controls that. It will need to be turned in a little and should cure this. Do not turn it in to much as it will interfere with your low idle speed. Get the book. On the bottom of the governor housing there is a cap with a screw behind it. Turn that screw in a little at a time with engine not running, while making the adjustments. LE

Larry has given you the instructions to adjust "hunting" out of the governor. Hunting is where the governor doesn't like to settle down and run at a constant speed but instead "guns" the motor every second or so.

However, governors rarely start hunting unless there is another problem. As George suggests, read the manual and familiarize yourself with the governor adjustments and the renewal procedure, especially if the problem has cropped up SUDDENLY. I suspect someday soon you'll be glad you did.
