Grandpa's Super H

Was at an estate sale today to bid on my Grandfather's old Super H for my cousin. Still ran nice. One pair of wheel weights (no fluid) and a narrow front. Aftermarket fenders added and a new dent in the grill. Hadn't been restored, just repainted about 5 years ago, (showed minimal prep before painting) and new rear tires recently. Nothing to make this SH stand out from any other, except for the fact that our Grandpa owned it. Sold to someone about 7 or 8 miles away for $3000. Just too much for my cousin right now. Does this seem like a lot for a SH to any of you? Before the bidding started, I'd guessed that it would sell for under $2500, maybe even less than $2000, but I don't follow prices of IH's. Was it out of line?

Thanks for all your input. Just thought I'd add that I'm in NW WI, and there was a C w/ loader that brought $1600 or $1650 and an H w/ original fenders, average to poor tires and average paint that brought $1100 at that sale also.

depend alot on location also. What state are you in? Doesn't sound too far out of line with the good rubber etc - at least here in Wisc that sounds like an alright price. Pat

Super H's are increasing in price probably because of the relative low production. A Stage two with live hydraulics seem to bring about 500 more. I would say for the tractor you described that was about correct. There will always be cheaper and more expensive ones depending on condition.

the stage 2's are a bit nicer..... but the stage 1 is still a tough tractor and they do have the higher speed trannys

The tires and fenders would cost you $1000 or more to put on any old SH. Seems about right. Stage II's are going as high as 3800 here, w/o fenders, average rubber, old paint.

I paid $1300 for my stage 1 SH a couple of years ago. It had a pretty good cut in a rear tire but would run a long time, just cosmetic. I am wanting to restore it pretty thoroughly, so with tires and all I will end up with $3000 in it. But $3000 in unrestored conditions sounds kinda high to me.

if it was a stage 2 super that was a good deal. if it was a stage 1 they paid a premium. The 53 stage 2's are a little harder to come by and make the pricfe go up more then the 54 when all were stage 2 that year. was it a stage one or 2? you can tell if the battery is under the seat or not. if its under and orignal its a stage 2. Also you will see hydrolic res where the battery would normally go (under the gas tank).

Never heard of "stage 1" or "stage 2". I think it's a '53. Serial no. 19005 J. Battery under the gas tank. Thanks for the info.

That was a GREAT price for that Super H if you're the seller, then.

It's a Stage I, which is just an H with disc brakes and a higher horsepower engine.

Stage II moved the battery box to under the seat, moved the starter to the other side, and added live hydraulics in a reservoir under the gas tank.
