My friends IH666D (German Engine) misses when hot and working hard after an hour. It has gotten bad enough now that soon after it starts missing it just stops. After it cools a bit it starts and runs for a few minutes, then stops again. He has changed the fuel filter twice now in 60 hours. He put in 15W40 oil becase a mechanic said the engine oil was involved in pumping the fuel. ( I don't understand that, educate me. ) The local dealership mechanic does not know what the issue is but has not not had the chance to look at it closely either. Does anyone have any ideas what is happening? Could the fuel injection pump be temperature dependent? Thanks, Paul in WI.

You probably have some blockage in the fuel tank
as Scott suggested. Make sure its vented too.
If there's a shutoff valve at the fuel tank I would remove the fuel line while holding a clean container under it and see if there's a full stream of fuel running out. Hal

A 666 will have the American 312 in it. The german was not installed until later in the 686 production. Sounds like it is not getting fuel. Remove all the fuel lines and clean them out good. Also check and clean the fuel tank. Sometimes you can have something floating around that will plug the outlet then when you shut it down it will float away. If everything checks out then it may be time for a rebuilt pump.
