Fixed the little pump and finished my 3 point hitch!

You know what....the solvent did indeed eat up the old felt/rubber seal. It was hard as heck to get the old retainers out but I managed after much toil. It was just as bad as doing the PTO output seal too. I had to like drill and use a slide hammer to beat that one out.

The shaft wasn't worn at all and the seal fit tight BUT I could see where it was starting to show some friction so I know I wasn't too far from it. I had to use a pick to work the lip of the seal around that stepped shoulder on the shaft but after that ploooop she went right on. Anyhoos....here are some pics. Now I did take some pics of the innards but the resolution was so bad I couldn't get them to show any detail. I split the pump and pulled the impellers, brass bearings, gear, and spring then cleaned and replaced them all and put fresh O-rings in. It still looked new in there but I figured what the heck. third party image

Patrick: Great responce you got here, just about all of them I have talked with from time to time about offset tractors. There are a few of them missing but for the most part you have the cream of the offset crop. Since I've become obsolete, this will allow me time for a YT vacation. But it could get worse, just be on the lookout for a burgendy Buick in your driveway.

Scotty, your the most likely candidate, mumma wants to stick her toes in salt water, coming or going one or the other will be across NY, VT, NH, MA and ME. Not going to happen until Oct.

LOL! Thanks Hugh and I'd say you are far being obsolete bud! :) And anytime you feel the need to sample some cajun cusine then let that burgundy Buick rip!

Patrick, when you send me those pics of the M hitch how about one of your hitch on the 100 as well. I will save it for future reference. Thanks.

I have yet to install it but I have one. Also have a tachometer for the PTO and one for the engine. I have a neat little wraparound cluster panel that I've been working on and haven't had time to paint it yet. Will be doing that soon however! :)

Mornin Pat, Nice job ! My pump drive gear had worn the end of the pump shaft and I had to grind the end diameter down and press a new bushing on. I replaced the o-rings also, as with the whole touch control unit. The PTO rear seal was a bear as you say, I ended up pulling the whole unit off but managed to get it done. Remember that your kind of limited on the amount of weight that you can lift with that rear rockshaft ! Good luck with your new setup !

Thanks Scotty! I have a question aboust just what you mentioned. Would you happen to know what the max lifting capacity is of the rear lift? I sure would like to know so when I shop for implements I will know if something is too heavy or not.

Patrick: The offset tractors are quite comfortable with 500-600 lbs. Another factor to consider, it depends how far back from hitching point the implement extends. Tandem disks are in this catergory, lot of weight in those back gangs. I have a rotary hoe, must be close to 800 lbs., however the weight is all within 2' of the 1 point fast hitching point. 8 to 10 foot boom poles are out, probably do well to lift 100lbs., 10' back.

You might want to install some seat stops so you dont break your seat springs. I thought i'd be smart and leave mine off till i broke one of the springs.Maybe it was a weak spring but i have some on it now.

Where would I find seat stops? I was actually thinking of just cutting tome 2X4's and sliding them under the seat to prop it up a bit.

Is there somewhere I can find some fresh springs to put under the seat?

Patrick, new seat springs are available from OEM for about 35 bucks a piece. May be available from somewhere else, but I don't know. OEM 1-800-283-2122

The seat stops are nothing more than bolts that the end stops a half inch or so shy of the seat spring thus allowing it to hit it only when the spring is flexed down by extra heavy weight. I used a carriage bolt for my stops and installed it where it would hit the head of the bolt.

It looks like your seat is mounted far back and the angle iron has a hole drilled for a stop but its a little far back. You might move the seat up some and just install a bolt in the last hole toward the rear of the seat support and do away with the angle iron.

If you use the 2X4's it will take all the shock absorbtion out and make the ride a lot rougher.

OEM Tractor has the new springs but yours look fine to me.

There's a 9/16" nut and a washer type retainer that you bend down. Just slip the gear off afterwards.

Hey Patrick, looks like a pretty good job to me. Those lower link brackets may be a little light, but may be fine as these babies are Hugh's area. I have never fooled with the offsets much. I did build a 3 point for my M years ago and my lower link bracket was a little lighter than yours and I bent them moving large hay rolls with it. For what you will likely be doing with yours I suspect they may be fine. Good Job, it looks fine to me.

Thank you very much George! :) I do have a fabbed up 3pt for one of my M's that I am going to send you pics of probably tommorrow night to see what you think. I think I might have goofed up on part of it but I'll let you be the judge of that. I used allof of angle iron on it and made it a single cylinder lift but maybe I should have gone with a double????? ?

That is how I built mine. I used heavy angle iron for the mounting, a 31 spline Ford truck axle for a rockshaft and only one cylinder. It worked fine for years. All I used it for was to move hay around in the winter as the old M starts in any weather. Someone must have liked it, as they stole it right out of the barn.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you use for lift arms?

Patrick, I used the lift arms from a IH 274 cultivating tractor that I traded off. I welded 3/4 X 3 X 16 inch flat iron to the rockshaft for the lift links to attach to. I copied mine right from a picture of a store bought set up. It turned out quite well and worked very well. The only real difference was the picture was of one with 2 cylinders and I only made mine for one.

Hey guys by the way, do these look OK? These are the brackets that I fabbed up for my lift arms. They did pick up my disks and bushog fine, do you think I need to go with something thicker?
third party image

Also, if you look on the lifitng bar (the black one, I coated it with POR-15). Is there supposed to be a spring on it and if so is the sleeve supposed to slide back and forth?

I tried heating it but it wouldn't budge so I guessed it must be permanently affixed there. If this is wrong I will go back and try to loosen it again. Let me know!

OOPS...

Also,,,,the seeder drive unit on the inner left final drive is leaking badly (see the floor). Is there any trick to making it seal or should I just remove it and install a cap. I have a cap but I just replaced this seal and it fit tight but still wont seal?

Take it back off and install two seals back to back in the seal retainer and pack it with greese between the two.

Did you install a new gasket? If not then you need to do get a new one.

If you had the original seal you can see it had a double seal in there. It was twice as thick as the new seals and there was a little gap between the two seals but they were built as one seal.

I think it was georgeky that told me about the shaft wearing. If you feel on the drive shaft you will likely feel a wear spot in it. Try putting the new seals in where they are as far apart from each other as you can and that way it avoids the old wore spot. The metal part of the seals should face towards the outside.

With the two seals it makes it difficult to get it back on the shaft without one of the seals lips catching on the shaft and curling back. Get a piece of pvc pipe the same size as the shaft and run it thru the two seals first then butt the pipe up to the shaft and slide the assembly onto the shaft.

Apply a little greese to the new gasket to help it seal.
