Well, I replaced the intake manifold gaskets, the fuel filter, and the fuel shut-off solenoid. The two front plugs look darker now, so it appears that the front intake gasket was leaking some. However, the engine runs pretty much the same as before. I have done a compression check on it and found the following numbers:
Cylinder 1: 149 psi
Cylinder 2: 154 psi
Cylinder 3: 149 psi
Cylinder 4: 155 psi
I don't know what the correct value is for compression on a C-153, but they seem decent, as all are within ten percent of each other. I also left the compression tester on each cylinder for about a minute, and none seemed to leak down in that time. I double checked the firing order and plug wiring and each seems correct, as the distributor rotates clockwise. What else could cause it to miss and sputter when revving it up and sound like it is not hitting on all four? Thanks.

had a 230 swather with same engine that lost power and wouldnt accelerate properly without missing, we thought fuel, turned out it was points, the contacts were so worn they were gone!

If you have a tach/dwell meter, use it as a tach and measure the RPM drop on each cyl. as you pull the plug wires off (one at a time). If the RPM drop is uniform on all the Cylinders, (or not much different as it can be variable) then it may be fuel related. could there be H2O in the fuel?
Anothe diagnostic tactic might be to see if the distributor shaft/bushing assembly is wornout. With the rotor off, look closely at the shaft when trying to move it (not in out, but up, down, toward engine and away. If you can detect motion here at all by feel it is too much. The point timing will be so bad that it will run terribly. A rebushing of the housing can be done at a good machine shop, with a bushing longer than stock so it rides on new shaft about 1/2" farther inside the housing (not toward the points). Good luck, JimN

Also, I forgot to mention that the engine's exhaust smokes slightly greyish at constant throttle setting and when the throttle is quickly opened, the smoke becomes darker.

Yes, it runs rich, as all 4 plugs are black, however, it always smoked when it wasn"t under load, and all 4 plugs have always been black. The dealer put richer jets in it because the combine would fall flat on its face when it was working at full load. Since the jets were changed, it ran great under load, but would load up on fuel when standing still. I just ran it again and noticed that at idle, there is a definite and consistent plunk in the air cleaner, which makes me think it is backfiring through the carb on one or two cylinders. With such good compression, it couldn"t be valves, could it?

If your carburetor has a t-handle as in this picture you need to close it and this will lean the fuel mixture. Hal

Chadd, switch number 3 and 2 spark plug wires for me one time. if no better, put back and switch the other two. It must be simple, and this suggestion is. JimN

What clearance setting are the valves? Hal
PS: If you are setting them cold you need to add .002" extra. Ex: If it calls for .015" hot
set them at .017" cold.
