Deere guy here wondering on a tractor I found. I have found an O 6 that is now a gas tractor. 2 wierd things though, the tractor is terrible rusty, very little paint remaining except for the engine, which is bright red. It also has 2 tanks, a small gas tank and the large tank like a normal M. Did the make a O 6 Diesel and this was one but has had a M engine put in? Or was this an all fuel tractor? There are no remnants of a fuel switching valve left like a all fuel would have. What do you red guys think its story is?

BL,

There was a McCormick ODS-6 diesel but not a O-6 diesel. Does yours have the complete orchard sheetmetal? Check your serial number plate. If it has the prefix OBK it is a O-6, OBKS is a OS-6, and OBDKS is a ODS-6 diesel. If it was kerosene or distilate it would have a suffix of X? for kerosene or X17 for distilate after the serial number.

Harold, Standards would have used Ws,not Xs, so I always assumed orchards would have the W as well. Am I wrong?

John,

You are correct. The X was the suffix fuel codes on Farmalls, W on McCormicks, and Y on Internationals. W3 kerosene, W3B kerosene 5000 ft, W3C kerosene 8000 ft, W17 distilate, W17A distilate 5000 ft, W17B distilate 8000 ft, W1 gasoline, W1B gasoline 5000 ft, W1C gasoline 8000 ft. on the orchard tractors.

The small tank was for gasoline to start and shut the engine down. The large tank was for low- compression fuel, such as kerosene or distillate for operating the tractor. Now days, the cost of kerosene is cost prohibitive, so most people use gas to fuel their tractors.

Does your tractor have the full orchard sheet metal? I’m going to look at an OS6 this morning to add to our collection. The S stands for standard, as it came without low sweeping fenders to push aside branches in the orchard.

I'll post a picture later today of our find.
